I'm looking for a YOUTH model bolt action deer rifle with a shorter LOP or the spacers that can be removed to make it shorter. The young'un has shorter arms and just can't reach on a full size rifle so I'm looking for suggestions on what to buy him. A threaded barrel/brake would be nice but not a must have.

I got my grandson a Savage 16 years ago when he was 11. That rifle is a real tack driver. With Hornady 154 gr interlocks I've already shot 1/4 MOA 5 shot groups with it. Of course my grandson is 18 now and I had to get a Limbsaver slip on butt pad for it. He won't part with that rifle.
I don't think Savage makes that one any more but like Dude said above you can't go wrong with a Tikka. Not sure if they make one but Bergaras are nice too.

As I’ve told here before many times, I bought my grandson a Howa Mini Youth in 7.62x39 four seasons back when he was 9. Wanted a Grendel, but couldn’t find one then. No matter, as the little russkie has put down three bucks so far with Hornady steel-cased 123gr SSTs. He’s at that stage now where nothing edible is safe if in his reach, so the adult stock that MtnBoomer slimmed down and painted will be going on it soon. I already replaced the guard and magazine with a hinged floorplate. I also donated an Alpine in .243 for use by him and someday his sister when she starts. She’s 5 and eager to get in on the fun herself.

Can’t say enough good things about the little Howas. My own is a Grendel and I just had it out for the first time since installing a stock from Wayne York. Shot it at 200, 250, and 300, and from a rest anyway, the steel plates were easy pickings for the 120gr Gold Dots, steered by a 1-6 Trijicon.

I have owned a couple of Weatherby Vanguards in youth models that were given to my grandkids. One was a .223 and the other a 7mm-08. The .223 shot like wonderfully right out of the box, the 7mm-08 took a little work with some bedding of the action and a little more work in finding a factory load it liked but it now shoots great also.

Tough to beat a 18" Rifle Gassed M4 Krunchenticker in Wylde, wearing M4 and a 'pad affixed same(Limbsaver snap on). If aspooked, simply drive an adjustable 'block and turn it off and make it a Manual Transmission. Throw the Loudener offa' fhuqking cliff. Hint.

The Howie Mini's can be exceptional,in a good stock. For Duffers, the 223 is more than plenty. Hint.

Remmie Sevens suck ass and their stocks are schit. 7-08 is a DIRTY fhuqking trick, for a Duffer. Hint.

Teeker Goat Fhuqktitude,is a Bitter Pill. RAR's of the ilk. Hint.

Salvage is just plum MEAN. Hint.

+1 on the Howa in 6.5 Grendel. My daughter was just sighting ours in today. I put a Boyds laminate stock on it with a 12.5" LOP. Half" to 3/4" groups are the norm.

If you go that route change out the mag. well and release.

My son it shooting a model 7 with a youth stock. It’s very accurate. If I was buying new, I would look at the Howa Mini in 6.5 Grendel.

Thank you JENKINS, well said.

Any light recoiling cartridge in a proper fitting stock - My youngsters started on Weatherby Vanguard in 243 and then a Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 when they grew some. I just bought a Howa mini in 6.5 Grendel which would have been nice for the kids, but I'll be using it myself this year. Lower powered scope with good eye relief and big field of view is also helpful for the kids. Good luck and have fun with them , only young for a short time...Joe
