Here's the story. Just picked up a 1972 M94 that has been abused and has some light rust on the receiver. A lot of it went away just by rubbing with oil but some remains. Anybody have a suggestion for cleaning it up or should I just live with it?

The barrel and bore are okay, very good actually. The rifle is just a shooter but I'd like to make it presentable. Would very fine steel wool or a cloth wheel with jewelers rouge do any good?

Did a search but no joy. Thanks for any input.

Try Flitz. I use it on older firearms and it's amazing how much oxidation it removes but it does not harm the bluing. Thanks...Bill.

Flitz. Yes, hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try.

Thanks Bill.

I've used 0000 steel wool and gun oil after putting a 94 away without wipeing it down with an oily rag. works great!

.

Virgil's method works great. For stubborn areas I use the steel wool and lemon pledge furniture oil. (The lemon oil eats rust.) Then clean it off and use gun oil.

Picked up some Flitz on my way home from work tonight. Found it at Ace Hardware. Followed the instructions and polished out about 95% of what is visable in the photos above. I think I might try another application but it's really pretty good the way it is.

Thanks for the help you guys.

I was late seeing this thread, but I would have tried you to test Flitz first as well!

It isn't cheap, but does a great job on rust of the type you have (or should I say "had"!) -- better than steel wool and oil in my experience.

John (in Sweden now -- I had to bring back several tubes of Flitz on my last visit to North America!)

Flitz rocks. I've tried all the methods mentioned on this thread and I think Flitz still works the best. I'm glad it helped you. Thanks...Bill.

Nope. Brasso is largely an abrasive polish and will remove bluing.

Flitz is essentially a chemical polish and it doesn't remove bluing (or at least not when I tested it on the part of a blued barrel covered by the stock). I rubbed for a long while too, before I used it on a visible part of a gun!

I suppose somebody will now post contradicting me, but if you were going to damage bluing with Flitz, be prepared to really work at it!
