I still have this pre-war Model 70 Winchester in 30 Govt (30-06). It is equipped with a Lyman 45 WJS receiver sight. At some time in it life, someone trimmed the buttstock to fit a recoil pad. LOP is 13 3/4". As you can see, the rifle is in good shape for an 82 year old gun, and the bolt face is quite clean. If it still had the original steel buttplate it would be a $2,500+ rifle, but I've priced it as a shooter and an affordable option for a lover of the rifles from Winchester's heyday.

$1,250 + $35 shipping.

No. As is correct, the front bridge on Model 70 rifles has always been D&T's, to use for the rear base of the long target scopes of that time, like the Unertyl or Lyman. The rear was not drilled.

Nice rifle Biebs. I saw one just like it in a shop last saturday. They were wanting $1,100.00 for it, but the rear bridge was D&T. That does decrease the value quite a bit. Your rifle is pretty clean really. GLWS. For a guy that wants to shoot irons, this is the way to go.

The classic set-up back in the day, Lyman Alaskan in a Stith No Drill Mount. I equipped several of my prewar M/70's that way.

Biebs, Nice rifle. Is the stock notched to accept the WJS as would be original for that era or is the peep a later version WJS. Where are you located?

I'm in very northwest NJ, below Port Jervis and Milford PA. This sight has a base that curves around the wood surrounding the receiver, so the stock isn't notched when installed.

That sight sure looks like a Lyman 48 with target knobs (very desirable by itself). Nice rifle.

Its a nice third variation Lyman 48 WJS with the nice target style knobs. The short slide and contoured base did NOT require the stock to be inletted for the base. Made from 1947 to 1974.
