My son recently purchased a Browning X-Bolt in 280 Ackley. WE stripped the plastic stock and installed a Boyed laminate wood.
Now it's time to work up loads.
I'm starting with 160gr Sierra HP.
I didn't realize that the 280 AI was equal to and in some cases superior to the 7mm Rem Mag.
Nosler dat has the 280 beating the 7mm in velocity on average of 50fps. (increased pressure)
Quickload when brought up to equal pressures (65K) has them neck and neck with a slight advantage to the 7MM.
I'm going to have fun working with this thing and I see no need to play with belted cases any longer. Go check the Nosler data again. The 280 AI was shot in a 26 inch bbl. The 7mm RM was shot in a 24 inch barrel. Nosler family's fav cartridge at the time (almost 2 decades ago) was 280 AI. No way for the RM to get near a good powder burn. They compared apple pie to apple sauce in their manual.

I chose 280 AI for my Mountain Ascent. It shoots Hornady Precision Hunter extremely well. I am the limiting factor.
That said, Upstate made a very good point: Factory ammo selection and availability is much better with 7mm RM. But it kicks harder too.
There are options for custom loaded ammo...Copper Creek Cartridges is one. They offer load development packs. They load, you shoot.

Pitcher of my old [1986 ADL] Remington 700 280 Ackley Approved , on its second barrel, Broughton 4.1 magnum sporter 28'' + brake, blueprinted by Nathan Dagley, Center, N.D., 2 lb. Timney trigger, Manners EH-5 thumbhole stock 80% carbon showing, Bushnell LRHSi 4.5x18-44, Burris signature rings 20 min. inserts. Nosler brass, H-1000, 180 berger hybrid, CCI-200. Don't know velocity. Both barrels love ssc7828/h-1ooo/h-4831. Best group, not even going to say. Berger bullets have made a believer out of me in three very accurate rifles.
