There is no excuse to mistake a Whooping Crane with anything else.

That sucks. I hope the criminals are caught and get maximum penalties with time served being consecutive rather than concurrent.

I've seen whoopers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Texas. There were a couple of times Sandhills crane hunting plans were changed as whoopers were hanging out near the edge of the refuge in our direction.

Likely mistook it for a Spotted Owl. Easy mistake to make.

It is legal to shoot the fugin things in some states.

I know an inexperienced hunter who shot one by accident on a corporate boondoggle.He turned himself in. Was elk hunting in BC and in a meadow in the mountains I saw a pair, absolutely incredible, beautiful and HUGE! To be honest I did not know what there were and had to look it up when I got home.

With only approximately 440 in the wild today, I consider myself very fortunate to have seen them. Can't believe someone would shoot them, no mistaking them unless you are a moron.
