Peter Nealen
Normally folks seem to recommend a book, or series. I'm going to go out on a limb (as I haven't read all his books yet) and recommend an author. Don't know the guy, or anything about him beyond the short blurb google provides.
Read his "The Lost" series first. I wasn't moved by his prose, nor was I knocked off my feet by his angle of attack at a relatively small genre. But I did like his style, and I really liked the Christian bent to the literary arch of the series. Impressed actually, so after reading all the available books in that series I looked to see what else he had out there. I'm working my way through his "Maelstrom Rising" series now, and I can't recommend them highly enough. He paints a pretty accurate picture, as to who the real life good guys and bad guys are, in a not too distant future that is terrifyingly plausible.
He doesn't focus on the gun gack, but what is there is correct. I can't comment on the accuracy of some of the other stuff, as I'm not prior service. But I can tell you 100% he gets the politics right, domestic and global, at least as I as far as this interested and informed as I can be layman can tell.
As we move into the winter months, some of us will have more down time beside a fire with a drink of choice at hand. In the event anybody is interested I figured I'd do him a solid and toss it out there. If in a future book or series he takes a bent towards woke, pûssy bullshît I'll eat my crow.

I don't usually read fiction, but I'm going to take a look at this. Thanks for posting it.
The biggest problem our country has is not systemic racism, it's systemic stupidity.

Hope you enjoy the series as much as I am. Closing in on end of book 3. I’m a nerd enough to be super content and happy knowing I’ve got another 5 books in front of me.

Imagine a corporate oligarchy so effective, so advanced and fine tuned that its citizens still call it a democracy.

Nealen is a solid author. I haven't read his Unity War series, but I've read all the rest. American Praetorians takes place in conjunction with the events in Maelstrom Rising.
In a similar vein Jason Kasper has the David River "American Mercenary" series which is a pretty good read.

Thanks BGG I will check out your suggestions. Here are a couple of authors I would recommend - Ken Follett and Brad Thor.
