I just bought my first Savage 99,I have couple
questions.Serial number is 740xxx which appears
to be a mid to late 50s manufacture date, would
that be correct? It's a 300 Savage in 95% condition,
there is no pitting or rust anywhere, and bore is as new.
It came with a Weaver K4 60-B scope mounted with both a
Leupold base and set of rings in the same candition
My main question is how do I determine the model
F,R,S,or EG? Non schnabel forearm, triangle checkering.
I paid $450 for the whole rig and they thew in a box
of shells.I don't reload so what factory ammo,and I
know they are limited, should I try?
Thanks for any help

Hey,nice find.I'd say it's an R.It's pre-F...and not EG.
450 is fair for any huntin rifle.

On the ammo, start with Remington 150s. They seem to be a good all around performer.

Some guns like the 180s better from an accuracy perspective.

I believe you can get Winchester and Federal too. All of it has gone way up in price. Sure glad I roll my own.

Ammo is available from all the majors in 150 and 180 grain loadings. Those are pretty much the standard bullet weights since the inception of the .300 Savage. If you spend some time looking you can find others that load in other bullet weights such as 130, 165 etc. Not that much advantage to those. I prefer the 150s. Others go with the 180s. Try a few boxes and see what the gun likes.

Sounds like a nice find at a good price. That is without the Weaver scope. That is just a bonus. Let us know how she shoots.
