Anyone experience this in their pets?

Have a mastiff that had his first seizure about 45 days ago. On some meds but the seizures just really kicked in this past day.

Ideas? Experiences? Suggestions?

Had a friend who had a dog that was supposedly epileptic.

Was blood sugar related instead.

Had a lab years ago that I believe had epilepsy.
He had some violent seizures, and we didn't know what caused them.
Vet thought it was due to his age,he was 12-13 when he started having them.
Some were down right scary

I had a Labrador that was epileptic. Once it was diagnosed he was on phenobarbital the rest of his life, all he knew was peanut butter on my fingertip every morning.

It works well. The nice part is that once you get it under control you can lower the dosage to just a maintenance level, just enough to stop the seizures. Which was one tablet, or 5 mg per day as I recall. It’s reasonably cheap as far as meds go too.

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

A number of years ago I lost my German Shorthair Pointer to epilepsy. He was only three years old. Terrible seizures, loose bowels, and the vet could not save him.

At that time, I'd never heard of epilepsy in dogs.

Best of luck with your dog.

Low blood glucose has been ruled out.

On phenobarbitol now. Had a bad cluster yesterday. Big 120+ pound dog, so it's disconcerting when it happens. Really hard on him physically. I cannot imagine a dog that big being able to survive many of these in a short time period.

My son's dog that is only about 3 years old. Hoping we can work through this.

Discuss it with your vet. A med change or dose change may be in order. The meds often help but not always. Sometimes there is an identifiable cause but often not. It's a brain thing. My old lab is 15 1/2. She had her first seizure just after a year of age. I've probably seen her have a dozen or so in her life. I did immediately retire her from water work as she'd likely drown if it happened while swimming, and I'd probably drown trying to get her out. Best of luck.

We had a Toller with seizures -- started when she was about 6. Went on meds and stayed on them. Lived to be 13. I stopped using her for field work as it was way to risky to be out somewhere and have a seizure happen, especially if she was working in water.

Good luck and work with a vet that has experience with this. Also contact the breeder to see if there are any issues in the breed line and if there are could you speak to other owners.

+1

It made my (previous) dog sleepy and thirsty at first but it did help. It seemed like all of her episodes happened at night. It was horrible waking up to hear her flopping around. She was a sweetheart but got a little aggressive when she would come out of it. Peeing on her self and salivating were part of it.

Sometimes it continues to get worse. I hope I never have another dog with seizures. Good luck. Hope you can get it under control.

Does the phenobarbital work? I was on it for 14years and I guess it worked for me as I didn't have anymore seizures and I'm off it now.

We had a lab that started having epileptic seizures at about 5. They too took their toll and I discovered that it is hereditary in dogs, his father had them and the breeder knew and did not disclose. Champion blood lines ruined. We were ablr to manage with meds, but as he aged, they became more frequent. Wish I had better answers.
