Hunting Jacket. Stone Glaicer, Sitka etc.?


Breathable as possible would be nice. Warm enough with layers really on cold days. Keep a guy dry enough for a solid days hunt in rain. Is there such a thing? Walk/hike/pack a bunch. Tough?

Think its more versatile than KC's suggestion.?.? Like on a 50 degree day with just a short sleeve and open pit zips. Cold windy shty layer up underneath.

Yup, exactly. I get one size up and use it as my outer layer. Puffy or other layers go underneath, when needed. For glassing in truly deep-freeze conditions, I’ll put a packable down parka over top. For truly heavy rain, a hard shell comes out of the pack. But for 90% of conditions, the Kuiu Guide is my universal outer layer.

50 degree day and short sleeve? Hunting rut now in 30s with Kuiu Kutana jacket and layers depending on how much hiking the day requires. No complaints.

Second everything JS said. I’ll add, go two sizes up if you want to fit everything underneath on cold weather hunts.

A solid day of rain???? Good luck unless your stationary.

Haven’t spent a day in rain in a soft shell so FWIW….. Not sure how you dry a soaked softshell out at night without a heat source

Soft shell has potential, The Guide Jacket is nice, but returned it, Needed/wanted just a little room in the belly, Sitka Jetstream provided that…

Backpacking, rain and on the go…….I’m thinking Rain gear and kuiu Pro down Parka.

I've been searching for nirvana myself. This week I hunted in low of 9 with daytime high sub20, to AM temp of 25, high of 55. Big rain, I simply don't hunt. I'm getting old and cranky and I've shot my share if critters - I'd rather not hunt in heavy rain.

My issue with the Kuiu Guide, Sitka Jetstream, and other softshells is that they are too warm to hike or hunt in unless it's cold. I left camp yesterday at 9 degrees and hiked 1.5 miles in with a Sitka Lightweight next to skin, a Patagonia R1 no hood, and Kuiu 280 Strongfleece and was warm but not hot. We also had a bit of wind. I did have a Sitka Kelvin down hoody and puffy pants strapped to my pack. I ended up wearing both puffy pieces when we stopped - and glad I had them.

I like the Sitka Stratus over the Jetstream - it's softer and built to layer under. I should have left the Kuiu 280 home and added the Stratus yesterday because I was a bit cool trying to still hunt in my base and midlayers with temps in the teens. At dark, I tried to walk out in the Kelvin down hoody, only made it less than 1/2 mile.

I really wish Sitka would combine the Stratus and older synthetic Kelvin together, or the Kelvin lite down, into 1 jacket. I've carried both but would be happier if 1 jacket covered both. I'd love to find a softshell or equiv with 6-7 oz down, with a hood. I'm not a huge fan of rip stop as an exterior material - too loud and a bit fragile.

I use kuiu Yukon as my only outer layer when backpacking. Waterproof and I don't have to carry another jacket. Sized as Jordan describes. Big enough for base layers and a puffy underneath.

you're asking way too much of a single garment, maybe 50 years from now

solid day of rain limits you to good rain gear- jacket/pants/mitts- period.

cold weather stationary means a warm puffy- synthetic or down depending if it's dry-ish or wet-ish

cold weather on the move means a lightly insulated mid-layer and possibly a mid-layer and a windshirt, depending on wind

I am using the Kuiu Yukon pants and a grundens lightweight pvc jacket. Layers of course.

Recommend Showa Temres 282 or 282-02 for cold/wet conditions.

Better than most gloves when you want your hands to stay warm and dry.

Doesn't exist in an lightweight item or any I'm aware of. Also none of this stuff is tough. The closest I have is an heavy old tin canvas jacket but clammy and way too heavy and in cold it stiffens up.

I've ruined so much of the high tech stuff blowing out seams and impaling myself on blow downs.

Surprised how warm and comfortable the King's Camo Guide Series is in the desert shadow. Snow shadow version excellent, for winter, too. Even though it's "waterproof", I add ecwcs parka and pants for extra windy, shi tty weather.

Best scenario is when you can acquire 5 or 6 clothing "systems" to dial in any weather and terrain environments. Always bring extra clothing...avoids that Memorial Shelter naming consequence.

Which Grunden's pvc jacket are you using?

Bought the KUIU Guide Jacket Jordan. Only couple days in it so far. And I like it! 15 for lows and 30 highs right now... Layers. Really like the pattern I got matches my EXO pack near perfect. Seems like a winner!

Grabbed a guide jacket too on the latest sale. Nice jacket. Got the 240 hoodie too. That things a keeper.

Feels like an xl is closer to a l with kuiu for tops.
