For mamma in the living room. Keep her cozy in the evening. Took about 10 hours start to finish. Stove is a Quadrafire Discovery 1, black double wall pipe inside, stainless outside.

Saturday was crawling through the access holes to the attic and figuring out location options. Decided on location #4 after the first three were too tangled with air ducts and trusses.

After cutting a hole in the ceiling, I felt around for clearances from trusses, air ducts, and other structure. Centered the 12x12 square hole and cut it out, boxed it in from below and secured the ceiling box. I needed a screw thru the roof as a marker for the pipe flashing piece so I tied a plumb bob string to a screw and with 42" of extensions on the screw gun, was able to center the screw with the stove pipe hole.

Dropped the plumb bob to the floor to measure clearances and position the stove and hearth. Laid the hearth on the floor and removed the carpet, placed the stove and installed the stovepipe.

Cleaned up for the night and cut the hole in the roof today. Sealed up the roof jack installed the pipe and cap and viola, wood heat.

A weekend well spent.

Wabi, I bought the pipe, stove, adaptors, etc together as a package and that's what I got. Feels good to be done. Just waiting for inspection before firing. Hopefully I didn't miss anything. Followed the manufacturers installation instructions and the county said if I did they'd pass it so we'll see.

If I want to void my homeowners insurance and ensure the house can't be sold in the future I could skip the permit. Some people make bad choices, some make good ones.

Why through the roof? Keep from tearing up the T1-11?

Decided on a Hearthstone hybrid. Looking at two sizes of their Green Mountain series. All Hearthstone models have soapstone-lined fireboxes instead of brick and Tru-Hybrid burn engineering. You get the primary (wood), secondary (wood gases) and tertiary burns (catalyst, similar to Blaze Kings). Once they reach operating temperature, they only put out less than a gram of particulates per hour, and efficiency is in the high 70s to low to mid 80s percent range depending on size. The best part is that in doing so, they squeeze out about as much heat as is possible to get out of a stick of wood. Their run times are between 24 and 30 hours per load depending on size and several hours of useful heat radiated from the soapstone after the fire is out.

Because keeping the pipe/flue temps up mitigates creosote build up. Excel is the absolute best. Both their chimneys and double wall pipe are seamless stainless and can withstand several flue fires.

Because straight-up is better than having to make bends where creosote can build up. Plus straight up makes for better draft and easier cleaning.

BTW, T1-11 makes better firewood than siding.
