I’m curious how there was a second boat anywhere near the one being boarded and officers didn’t know about it and have cover fire available. My time in the navy we did counter drug ops in the Caribbean with the Coast Guard. The coasties would board a vessel and we covered them with M2 and M60 machine guns. This should have never happened. Sometimes in law enforcement you have to work with what you have. There isn't always backup available, and there isn't time available to wait and sometimes you blunder into something. Done right it's a dangerous business.

My SIL just retired from the Border Patrol as a pilot. He's been here the last few days wearing a Border Patrol hat and jacket. He'd flown these guys on many missions over the last 20 years. He got a call from one of them that day to tell him that they'd lost one of their own, someone he knew. This was before it hit the press. They told him that there was a 2d cartel boat that started the shooting. This came from the guys who were there. What the press or official reports say might be different. It's possible that he flew guys from other agencies along with BP agents. I wouldn't know about that.

My son-in-law retired from the BP this summer. He was here this last week to go hunting with me. He got a call a few days ago from one of his BP buddies. They intercepted a boat about 12 miles off the east coast and 5 BP boys boarded it. They found a crap load of drugs. While they were there, a 2d smuggler boat sneaked in and sprayed them with auto weapons fire. 1 BP agent was killed and a couple more hurt.
That's all I know at this time. Damn. That sounds horrific. Any updates?

If...it's the same incident as the news snippet posted above, there were 5 sets of eyes on the CBP boat...two sets should have been assigned sectors away from subject boat...hope it's not leadership failure. Drug interdiction is more dangerous than Uke war. When the pot raid tac teams hit a grow around here, it's 4 man stack in front, 4 flankers and 1 rear guard...unless they have a drone up, and then the deployment fits the real time infrared.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Rockchuck, next time you talk to your SIL about the death of a coworker and American who died in the line of duty, could you please quiz him more thoroughly about the current nomenclature of the employing agency, because that's what is important.
