I finally got around to shooting the prototype mount that made its debut at the 2007 fest. The mount was made by a friend who is a machinist by profession. Rifle is a .303 barrel banded H, scope was a Nikon 2x7 in Weaver low rings. The low rings really made a difference in handling
Many thanks again to Wesj and 1899sav for the ammo that was shot today. Results are off of sandbags.
I took two sighters at 50 yds with WesJs jacketed round noses and saw two holes a apart about 8 out, I was pumped. The next two were apart 2 out, I was really pumped.
At 100yds shooting the ammo That 1899sav donated to the cause (Precision cartridge Inc, 150 gr PP/FN, Hobart, Indiana) two shots apart 6 out, followed by two shots touching 2 out. Velocity of these four shots was 1832, 1843, 1891 and 1843.
I then shot 3 of my hand loads, 34grs of 4320, 150gr Hornady spire pt in Norma brass, and 1 1/4 with two almost touching. Velocity was 2024, 2019, and 1981. The recipe came from a 1982 Lyman Reloading manual.
You guys cannot believe how excited I am with these results, more shootn to do, Ill keep you posted. Bado

Are you going to have more of those mounts made up?
What will it go for$
Novel approach. Only drawback I can see is that the scope ends up pretty high over the bore.

We have to do a little tweaking, and then we will probably make a run. Price has not been figured out yet. My buddy thinks he can make them pretty reasonable. Right now the low weaver rings are sitting on a weaver mount for a 336 Marlin atop the bridge bar. The thought is to mill the bridge bar to except the rings, this would lose about 3/16 in height but the cost may go up, catch a 22. The way it sits now is comfortable for my 510 frame. Bado

Good Job Bado...you and your Pard. Love the knife block!

Looks great noticed the mount had Black Lick PA. Then I noticed you're from Pittsburgh. I'm from close to Irwin. Looks like a good thing you have going there. I'm sure you will have some takers.

Thats a nice set up, thanks for the range report, aren't you gonna have to change the set-up a bit for the different models, pretty sure the dovetails are slightly different from what you have. Les

Les, We can make up for the dovetail span difference in the bridge with hole spacing at the rear sight dovetail. What we found was a difference in the tang. The mount was laid out on the profile of a G, fit like a stinkin glove. When I mounted the rig on the barrel banded H we lost clearance on the barrel receiver ring. As I shot it on Sunday the bridge was spaced higher with washers, milling the bottom of the bridge should take care of the height difference.
What's your load for the .303? Bado
