I have a Leupold FXIII 6x42 scope, that I'm thinking of putting on a Savage 99R (300 Savage with a 24" barrel).I live in New Mexico,so shots will be longer on average than normal eastern hunting. What do you guys think of that scope on a 99?

I live in Northwestern Arizona, and like you, most of the time shots are a long ways! I have used my 99E Series A .308 (sorry fellas a post-mil) for a few years now. I started using it because my Remington 700 .270 did not put down an elk like I feel it should have back in 1999 or 2000(?). I threw a Leupold Rifleman 3X9 on it and I am VERY satisfied. I have taken 2 yotes, an elk, and a mountain lion with that setup all one shot kills(shocker on the coyotes-huh!). Now I realize that the Rifleman is Leupold's "lower end" model, but from thier info it sounds like it goes through the same torture testing as the other ones. I have a Vari-XII I think it is-and I can't see any less quality put into the Rifleman. Now I am looking at a Vintage set up (tang peep) for an older 99 when I find one, but for a practical "grab it and go" rifle that has more style and handling than a run of the mill bolt rifle, I will keep that set up on my .308. If you do it, I don't think you will be unsatisfied with the performance, let us know what happens!

I like the look of a Luepie on a 99. Specially a str8 tube.
When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

I put a scope on an R once and promptly took it off as it made a heavy rifle waaay heavy and the balance for carrying sucked, IMO. You'll have to try it for youself and see how you like it. I think an R with nothing hung on it has about the most perfect balance for offhand shooting as anything I have ever picked up.

I have 2 of the earlier 6x42 scopes & they are 1st rate. My savage 99f has a straight tube 3x on it.

I like the look of a straight tube also and have a Weaver K3 on one. I also have an older Leupold 4X on another that isn't a straight tube. I have an FXIII 6X on my Winchester Featherweight and love the scope, works great in low light. So for hunting purposes I think that'd be a great scope!
