Those look more like suckers than halibut. We tried it last spring one weekend for the first time ever. Not a clue what we were doing. Salmon rods with mooching rig, 3 oz pyramid sinker, freezer burned salmon belly for bait. Fished incoming tide, tho I don't know if that makes a difference. One small halibut, which the dog promptly buried.

I use a fly rod, 12wt Penn International and a raft or skiff (the raft is easier/better) and get the light right to drift over flat water at river mouths. Sight casting to "hiding" halibut. my best two were right at 80# each. flies just need to be big and visible.

My bad. I wuz looking at that fancy lead wet fly, I guess. I only fish one or two days a year anyway. You guys acually go snagging coho when they hit lures so well? Or was that a photo op that just couldn't be passed up? OK, I admit, my lure of choice for salmon is about 60 feet long and yards deep. Screw flailing the water all day long for a couple of fish. And sockeyes eat better than coho, anyway, so there!

If they get caught in my net, they are fillets.... OK, OK- I can tell them apart, if I look. Honest. Probably. Most of the time.

I surfcast for halibut and have for years. Heavy rod, pyramid sinker on slip rig, mooching hooks with half a herring. Sometimes a spin n' glow. Most any beach from Nikiski on down to Homer Spit has potential, some more than others. There is lots of competition these days when it used to be scant, so for the last five years we have been doing most of our fishing with a small Zodiak which is easily launched. May and early June is best, especially off beaches where herring run.
