Still looking for a good used truck, for work and for my soon to be 16 year old son to drive. Came across a '96 F150, 2wd with the inline 6 cylinder motor. Does anyone have any insight into that vintage of Ford? I know I have heard that the straight 6 that Ford used was a pretty good motor?

dont have any experience with that motor. However My very opinionated chevy lovin grandpa claims that that motor was the only thing ford ever did right.

Well, this truck seems pretty clean and straight. 96,000 miles on a '96 seems pretty low. Looks like it has been garaged much of the time. No rust around the wheel wells, which had always been a bit of a problem with some of the Fords that we had owned.

You heard right it is a tough motor. Actually a pretty good truck for a kid, because it won't have a lot power, but it will last. Really can't say enough good about em. Plenty around if he were ever to need parts too.

We have other 4wd trucks and our town is flat as a pancake. Also removes a bit of the temptation to go out "4 wheeling"

when I had the unfortune to be stuck driving a 2wd (better than not drivin at all) It didnt stop me from tryin to see how far I could get that 2wd pickup. Had a buddie that took an old nissan sentra to hell an back. You wouldnt believe where he took that lil car.

It does sound like a good first truck though.

automatic or manual?

Bogger,

I know what you mean, but I hope that if he tries it, one long walk for help or a call to me to come pull him out will be educational! The truck is regular cab with 96k miles and a automatic tranny. I think it is a 4 speed with OD?

Was Ford still making the 240 CID that late? It's the same engine as the 300 but with a shorter stroke and a little less power. It was equally tough, though.

never helped me. I remember a long walk to work beause I skipped school an got my jeep burried. 3 mile walk in the snow to work.
Only thing I learned was that the ties I had on the jeep werent worth a schit in the clay mixed with snow grin

An I wont tell you how many people I have had to call to pull my butt out. FInally bought a winch an it solved most of that issue. course im a slow learner.

I remember sitll getting our old '74 Ford stuck in the snow when I was about 17 and having to walk for a phone in tennis shoes! Of course, that was in the days before cell phones! I did learn to be a little more careful of where I tried to go with 2wd!
