I'm new to the forum and not sure this is even getting posted in the right spot. I have always loved lever guns and a Savage 99 has always been on my list. I found one the other day at a LGS and the asking price was $1300 which I initially thought seemed very high until I saw a Marlin .444P next to it for $1400 which I have one and never would have thought prices would get this high. But to move on to my question. I carefully inspected the Savage. It is a Pre Mil 1956 Model 99F .308 in VG to NM condition. All original and bluing is excellent. My question to any of the Savage 99 collectors on here is, Would $1100 be a fair price for this Model 99 ? I have dug through all the auction sites and of course prices are all over but with what I see and this being a pre mil it may be worth it. Thanks in advance for any input fellas.

If you plan on reloading and shooting the weapon I would recommend holding out for a 300 savage.
If you are going to collect/ or use factory ammo I think $1100 Is a price that would be for a very nice , clean ( almost pristine) model 99.
Welcome to the campfire!

Personally, I wouldn't give 1300 for it. 1100 would be the tippy top in my opinion. And it would have to be pristine or nearly so.
That is my opinion. Others may differ.

‘56 was a very good year for 99’s if my ‘57 .300 F is any indication. From reading here on the Fire, I’m understanding that a lot of guys are reloading their .308’s down to the .300 Savage level for deer hunting. The .308 99’s recoil some more than lots of guys like, but on the plus side, .308 factory loaded ammunition is everywhere. That certainly isn’t the case for the .300 Savage cartridges. As to the price thing. You will make more money, but Savage won’t make more Savage 99’s. The wife and I have a saying that we apply to possible new purchases. Do you want it? Do you need it? Can you afford it? If it can check two out of three boxes, we usually get it. This sure isn’t the place that is going to discourage you from buying a nice 99 F.

Based off of the last 2 years of sales, I wouldn't think $1100 was out of line for a collectible 1950's 99F in 308. Heck, I saw some go higher than that 10-12 years ago.

question for a 99F, did they make any 99F, vers2, style 3 fluted butt stock, but with style 4 features, (tang safety, gold trigger), with cartridge counter in Chicopee Falls (thought it should be Westfield with a serial number of 1020xxx, post mil) and shouldn't have studs. there's one on gunbroker price is seemingly high, even for an anomaly rifle. Am I missing something about this one? If I am, looking for more schooling https://www.gunbroker.com/item/965443869

Here's where I stand. I wouldn't give that, because I don't want one. If it's in top top condition, then it's in your court. I passed on an 1899 Short Rifle in very good condition, in 38-55 with a great bore. I passed because it had aftermarket sling studs. I was kind of at $1500 on it, and it sold for $1700. Who knows where it would have stopped if I jumped in? I had over $3000 in my pocket. Now 12-15 years later I wish I had of kept going. Whatever it came to would have averaged itself out by now. Lots of guys here and on the FB Club have F's in 308. So, I'm sure another will come along. If you are good at $1100, and the seller is, get it.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That is too much, 1100 be tops for me. I have one made in 56, heck of a shooter. I don’t think the recoil is bad at all with 150 grain GameKings.
If you really want it, buy it, just money, they may go lower if you bargain with them.
Beware!! If you buy one, others will follow. You will never be the same.

My Dad taught me that if it's the gun you want, in the condition you want and can afford it buy it when you find it. If it's an investment, that's a different story.
I personally don't think I'd pay that much for it unless it looked like it had never been used and probably not then. However, I have a 99F in .308 that I bought a few years ago and fell in love with it. I had never shot a .308 and am not particularly fond of the foreends on the Fs, but that gun is now my go-to hunting rifle. Very accurate, handles and fits me very well. Some guys complain about the recoil, but I've had zero problems with it.

In this day of soil your shorts prices I’d say 1100-bucks is a good price for the age, caliber and condition you described.

You don't get that kind of quality in a gun nowadays for$1100.

Yeah, I'm close enough to drive up, but that would be breaking my New Years Resolution of only Pre WWI rifles this year, just 14 days in.

new year's resolutions are made to be broken. the sooner the better. You know the deal David, you collect more than guns too. I might be heading to PA this week to get a Wisconsin THD twin, for a tractor project. Those old engines are like 99's, when you see them you gotta get um. Especially when this one is running and it's half price of just a core.
