The only one I ever shot was a 30-06 and it had a scope on it but either the.scope was bad or it wouldn't shoot good enough to zero the scope.

I have a 2-7 Redfield Revolution on mine. Used to have a 2-7 VariX-II. No complaints with either.

If you're expecting to jump shoot whitetails under 50 yards, no more than 2x and a heavy/thick reticle will get you on target more quickly.

My favorite is a vx3 2.5-8x36. Small light scope but still bright and clear and you can crank it up if you have the need.
A lot of small scopes have small objectives and get tougher to get behind and you loose some shooting time.

Leupold 1.5-5x30. I’m considering a Trijicon 1-4 with the post reticle.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I consider that a 200 yd rifle ... one thing I have used on an 06, that was handy for woods ranges, is one of the 1.x 4 or 1.5 to 34.5, with a shotgun reticle. Some low cost ( $60 range) Bushnells with a circular reticle with cross hairs in the middle of it, I have found real useful... even out to 300 yds...they are tough scopes, the clarity are fine for my not so perfect eye sight.. plenty of eye relief.. and that reticle I described ( I call it a pie pan reticle) think of it as a real big target dot, that you can see thru most of it...
I find it useful, and have dropped several black tails at 300 yds or more.. with NO issues... off a 260 Rem chanbered Ruger 77 Mk 2, and a 243 in the same set up....Loaned rifles I have taken out kids from Scouts, using some of my own rifles, have proven real effective for kids also... close up or at distant....
got a 350 Legend in a Savage Axxis, which I think those shot gun scopes would be ideal on that rifle and that chambering....

I prefer a 3x9 compact.
The Model 6 and 7600 are more accurate than most would think. I used Sierra 165g SBT and 165g HP whose ogive is very easy to tune an accurate load with. 57g of IMR 4350 shot 1" groups.
Going to a VLD type of bullet would not be advantageous, but with trial and error, you could find a good tune...I don't have the patience on a rifle where I have to clean from the muzzle and you need to clean and examine with a bore scope...accuracy will be shocking.

I have a bit of a pump gun fetish thanks to this forum. Some wear peeps, some scopes. 1-4, 1.5-5, 2-7, 3-9. For what you're describing a 2-7 should be a good compromise and easy to find. Enjoy that carbine!
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Picked up a nice one today 30-06 200 yards or less on shots I’m thinking 1.5-5 Or 2-7 Exactly! I run a Leupold 1.5-5 on my 7600 in .358 Win and Leupold 2-7's on both of my 760 and 7600 Carbines in .30-06. Shot opportunities here in the Vermont mountains out to 200 yds are rare, usually much closer.

My Whelen (not a carbine yet....this year is the year I cut it) has the same 2.5-8 that was on it when I bought it.
