I am ticked off at both of them. No bullets, making new caliber ammo while discontinuing older calibers (my biggest gripe), hardly any powders to be had......primers too. There are some great rounds that have been discontinued and no longer available. They used to have runs of 303 Savage, 284 Winchester, 30 Remington, and others. I am glad to see other companies picking up some of the slack though. I myself have enough of each caliber to live out my life with. I just think it is a shame to make new stuff when they can't take care of the old. Sure makes me feel confident running out and buying the newest offering. NOT
Rant over.

Remington small primers are available all over.
Win Powders are also widely available, more so than any other powder besides Western.

The problem is that if the LGS is going to stock the new stuff, they have only so much shelf space and have to stop stocking some of the old stuff. And the new stuff isn't any better, or marginally so.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

Afternoon Jim,
you may have missed where Remington was in receivership and was recently sold and the ammunition part is up and running working 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The Remington firearms is now part of a different company.
There was no productions while the Remington company was in receivership. They lost one too many lawsuits.
Winchester, has been in operations and making ammunition 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The shortage is probably the result of government contracts that they are trying to fill. It will take them another 3 to 4 years running around the clock to fill the order.
Maybe with a new president this could change.

They make more money selling you a new gun with your new ammo than if they only sold you ammo.
The parts house don’t stock much for the Model A Ford anymore either.

They make what sells. Even years ago those less common rounds were only loaded once a year during down time after they got caught up with the production of more common stuff. Right now they are selling common ammo faster than they can make it. They aren't going to shut down the production line and retool to make a handful of of 303 Savage when they can't keep up with the demand for 308.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

I don't know anybody who uses the 303 Savage, 30 Remington, or 284 Win that are dependent on factory ammo or even need it

Maybe 50+ years?? Really? How about all the creedmores, 7-08, 30 remington AR, 224 Valkery and a couple of others just recentlyh. I reload all my ammo so I am good to go. I just hadn't bitched in a while so I thought I would try it and see how it feels. I am glad to see new manufactures of brass, primers, powder, and ammo beginning to churn out some product. I understand the economics. I would do the same if it was my money invested, Jim

They stopped making all that stuff because not enough people were buying it to make it profitable.

They won’t make nothing better than the 270 308 or 30/06 no matter how hard they try

They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

THE END Oh, I'm sure it was profitable, but it isn't profitable ENOUGH (as far as they're concerned). Why dedicate production lines to something that is X amount profitable, when they could dedicate that production line to something that is XXXXX amount profitable? A trendy cartridge with an oh-so-hipster name like "Legend", "Blackout", or "Creedmore".....
