i know i have read on hear a lot that there with a savage you can screw the barrel nut off and switch barrels to a new caliber so my question two fold

a) can i switch from a 222 to a 223 by just switching barrels or do i need a different bolt

B) the savage i am looking at is pretty old so can you also do this with older models?

You would have to determine if your older Savage has the old style "c" type extractor/ejector system or the more modern plunger type ejector. Different bolt head design. And the old style barrels had, (and I don't know the proper term) a bigger diameter band at the rear sight mount on those barrels that had open sights. My understanding is that those older guns are NOT interchangeable like today's 110.

The older ones with the "C" extractor have a barrel with the breech end recessed like a Rem 700. Newer barrels are flat-ended and newer extractors slide in a slotted RH bolt lug. I don't know if the raised ring for the rear sight dovetail disappeared at the same time as the bolt face style/barrel end was changed. Within one system, newer or older, barrels are interchangeable. 222 and 223 use the same bolt face.

What I haven't found out is if newer bolt heads will fit the older bolts so modern barrels can be used. Maybe a whole bolt could be switched instead. Midway has/had Savage bolts and bolt heads.
