Lived in a small mill town when numbers was big....They always had something for us kids. Candy and such. Wasn't much that was under the covers about it. Everyone knew the books or the paper store that took numbers. Even us kids could bet a dime. And if you hit, they looked you up and paid off. Sometimes you would be asked to pickup a case of beer at a local bar and take it to one of the houses were they ran a card game....and they would give you a .25. Use it to bet if you wanted. Everyone knew and it was NBD.

Next door neighbor in Chicago was a bag man for the MOB. He was of Sicilian birth and lived in a nice house with wife and kids. Whole neighborhood knew about it.

No, but I knew a few...
One was a big black guy who also was a Toolmaker, always late with his child support payments. I worked in the grinding room which was at the front of the plant, we had large windows that looked out into the parking lot at the front of the plant. Don worked in inspection/gage repair that was right next door. I'd see the city police pull into the plant parking lot, go into the plant security office. Funny schidt was I'd go into gage repair, yell to Don that cops were here. You've never seen a black man run so fast to go hide out in the back of the plant... 😁😂😂🤣🤣
If the cops come to the plant it's usually because either someone in your family has died or someone is going to jail.
