what's a good trigger pull on a 1911?My new Kimber Gold Match is breaking at 4.5 lbs regularly.Should i have it tuned ?

4.5 is acceptable, as a general rule, anything around 4 lbs. is considered good. My match gun was set up at 3.25lbs. and I considered that to be excellent. I know others who thought it was too heavy, but overall, I think 4lbs or thereabouts is plenty good.

A good trigger pull is one that suits the person pulling the trigger. Forget the numbers, do you like it or do you want it to be lighter?

A smooth take-up and a clean break are more important than a pound here or there. At 4.5 lbs, I'd let that be the deciding factor on a trigger job. Unless, I suppose, you're competing in Bullseye.

IMO - the quality of pull is much more important than the actual weight.

While I agree with the above comments on how the pull feels, I would say that I prefer a trigger on my 1911s to be right at 3.00 pounds. I had a Commander that we got a little too aggressive on the trigger sear and it ended up at 1.6 pounds, and we felt it was a wee bit dodgy at that weight. So a new sear and an adjustment to 3.0 pounds felt just right.

I personally like my triggers on all shooters to be on the light side with a target of 3.0 for pistols and revolvers and 2.0-2.5 on target or LD rifles and 3.0 pounds on hunting rifles.

Everyone has different tastes.

Depends the use. 4.5lbs is fine for carry. Most competent competitors are sub 3, many sub 2 with 1911/2011's. Personally I want no take-up. I can't stand two stage triggers.

If it's glass rod clean with no take-up & just enough over-travel to be reliable, most people will think 4 lb is lighter & be happy.

I recently picked up a mint used Dan Wesson PM-45 and that is exactly the trigger it has.

A crisp break that’s smooth through it’s take up is more important than it’s weight. If it’s not what you like there are many smiths that can give you a great trigger or you can install a trigger kit that’ll be very close to what a gunsmith can give. I have a Cylinder&Slide kit in a Springfield that said it would be 4lbs when installed. It was exactly that according to my Wheeler trigger pull gauge. Breaks very clean too.
