Do you think the term "lunch" was in use when Ben Franklin lived?

Kodiak deer are way down after this past spring. It was brutal. The more stories I hear the worse it sounds. I just spent a week and a half in Uganik Bay and saw 6. Saw several times that many bears...

There are some pockets of deer, but compared to years past it will be a while before the deer hunting gets back to average.

Are the deer a main food source of the bears?

Negative... Bears eat salmon, berries, grasses, wild celery heads, skunk cabbage, kelp and other junk on the beach and any carrion they find on the beach or hills. Deer only fall into the last category much when they are least likely to be of interest to bears, the spring. Have watched many bears walk past winter-killed deer without even slowing down to get to grass just beyond.

Nope...none left here either. Sounds like PWS is the place to go for deer smile.

We saw a bunch of bears in there! Just South of where you shot your bear by about 100 yards a bear was tearing up a cresote-soaked pole and rolling in it. They love stinky stuff! We set up for him several times but he never visited while we waited.

Did Bob get your mount done yet?

Also saw a bunch of bears in the Terror Bay/Uganik Passage hunte area, so that would be a good second choice... or perhaps first...

Art,

I got the hide back a few months ago, completely finished. It looks really good. I'll snap some pictures before I put it on the wall.

And I can't wait to hunt Kodiak again for bears.

Saw several bucks on the north end while goat hunting in Sept.. A friend just got back from the south end, 3 of them brought back 6 bucks, before the weather went bad.

I have a friend that has been on Afognak since mid Sept. I was going to hook up with him after Thanksgiving. Called me on his Satellite phone and said don't bother deer are almost non existant& ditto for elk. Late winter/spring storms nearly wiped them out. Too bad its a great hunt.

We had a hard winter, not just late winter either. This was only my third winter here but I was told it was a bad one by 25 year veterans. Art has seen colder I kow but we had deep snow/ice for weeks at a time, pulls the deer herd down after about 6 weeks straight. We were walking up to within 10 feet of deer on the beach last year by New Year's Day. Kinda sad. frown

This is really disappointing. Son and I are headed out on MOnday for a 10 day trip. We normally hunt Uyuk around Amook Island.
How much further south do we need to go to find good deer numbers?

Reports I have gotten are spotty everywhere. There are a few pockets of deer in places and Amook is a spot to start looking...
