So this is a NCO Officer's Sword who was a Marine- Leather Saya. The fittings were issued and it is oil quenched. These are known as Gunto in Japan and would be destroyed not too long ago. They have value now. It was made in Omi Province by a feller named MasaYoshi and he had skills. The value because of the shape would be between $1500 and 2000.00. There has been a bit of a collapse in the value of Japanese Swords but it still was handmade and it is valuable.

I know enough to know I would take an authentic Japanese katana or Samurai blade, or an honest to goodness civil war cavalry cutlass, from either side, and count myself lucky in the sword department.

My sen sei is an well known martial artist and actor. He's also an accomplished sword user and pistol expert. I can ask him.

That is not an NCO sword. It is an officer's sword. According to a well-known sword expert friend the mei says
"The signature reads:
関住石原義定作
Sek-jū Ishihara Yoshisada saku
“Made by Ishihara Yoshisada, resident of Seki”
There is not much info on this smith. We know that his real name was Ishihara Jō’ichi (石原錠一) and that he did not resume sword making after WWII. "
This means it is a handmade sword not mass produced so typically worth more money than mass produced factory blades during WW2.

These are commonly controversial but I would trust what my friend told me. He is a well-known Japanese sword expert and has written several reference books on these swords. I'd publish his name but I do not want him to be bothered with a million questions.
