No slot machined into the receiver, thus it can’t have a takedown forearm. The 99F and 99E are identical except for the takedown feature. So, in spite of the F on the receiver and the takedown barrel with the forearm installed it will look exactly like a correctly marked 99E.

Got it! Technically, I suppose It could have been a 99A or 99C as well, with a heavier, takedown barrel. But it is a 99E. Talk about youth of today being confused about their gender.. this poor thing is a total mish-mash! Now I'm wondering if most pre-300,000 SN 99E's don't have takedown barrels. The 99E was almost surely the lowest selling model of the 99E/99F/99G group with featherweight barrels, maybe they did the same thing they did with 22HP barrels and just made most of them takedown barrels?

Great grandpa Rory worked as a barrel installer at Savage. His line boss told him, “If the receiver is marked with an F, put on one of these barrels with the slot on it; screw up and you’re fired.”

What does it mean that my 1924 takedown does not have the F stamped there?

I was actually surprised to see an F there. I didn't think the model stamps started until later.
So it means nothing really. We need to revisit when the model stamps started - maybe this gun was one finished late. This is SN 266,3xx.

266313?
I show two others 286xxx and 288xxx made the same.
Most later 99A's (maybe all) had TD marked barrels. For low production model it might have been cheaper in the long run to make all barrel for the TD than to stock two versions.

This little gem of history needs to be remembered. I think I'm changing "never say never" to "always say anything" when it comes to the possibilities on the assembly line at Savage.

I have 5 99E's that range from 250,000-300,000 s/n and they all have takedown barrels. One has a 24" barrel in 303 ,another strange one. Don

Aha! Thank you, Don. Thought that might be the case.
That 303 is an oddball.

Bill, is it a takedown barrel, or solid frame? The ramp front sight 99E's I can see as having either, I would guess most would have solid frame since middle weight barrels were used on multiple models.
E and N stamps are interesting... hmm.

I would name it Egbert. Maybe Horace, or Bob. Yeah, Bob.

plab Since the only real difference is in an indexing slot and an OFF stamp which probably took a couple minutes to do, they probably just didn't worry about saving the time. Just got in an end of 1924 99D (takedown, heavy barrel) and it has an S stamp on it. We've seen so few 99C's and 99D's that I don't know if that means something or not.

I had the forearm off my 1925 99D yesterday. It too has an S stamped on the receiver.
Maybe they used S on the 99D for some reason - similar to Savage using 8 on the 99R & RS.

Wouldn't be surprised at that at all.
