Thanks, exchipy. We've found that these date codes are on pretty much every Savage/Stevens firearm in those timeframes. On 99's it's on the front of the lever boss, and under the buttstock on the left side.

I have a Model 24 O/U, .22LR over .410.

Stamped on the left side of the frame, approximately centered left to right and top to bottom on the frame, in three lines:
Savage
Savage Arms Corporation
Chicopee Falls, MASS., U.S.A.

Stamped on the right side of the frame, just over the front bow of the trigger guard and just forward from the barrel selector button:
MODEL 24
PATENT 2259397
(This stamping is at an angle, and the word "PATENT" almost starts off the lower edge of the frame)

The stamp "4C" (circled) appears on the frame, just above the forward bow of the trigger guard.

Three additional stampings appear on the barrel underlug:
- Left side, upper area: "SP" (we think) in a circle
- right side, very high upper rear, just under the lower barrel: "76" (or maybe "16") in a circle
- right side, rear, middle, and in a slightly larger stamp: "M" (upside down from the "76")

On the underside of the lower barrel itself are the letters "HR" followed by a couple of odd symbols... all four characters evenly spaced as if part of the same marking. The first character looks like a circle with wings on either side (the "circle" itself not really complete where the "wings" meet it). The second looks like looks like a sideways 1 with short perpendicular legs at both ends, one leg facing one direction, the other, the other.

The letter "B" is stamped another inch forward toward the muzzle.

If the "C" in 4C equates to the date code 1951 as in the list above, that sort of agrees with what (little) I know of the history of this particular O/U.

That date code info was in one of the Savage red three ring parts manual. I think it was from the 70's. I would have to dig it out to be sure.

It was the date codes and all the Savage 99 data provided by 24HourCampFire members that first allowed a ruff idea as to what the year end serials were. As far as I know there is no Savage 99 factory list of year end serial from 1948 till the A Series serial numbering started. All serial information for this period originated here on the forum.

When this Forum started, 18 plus years back, we were very interested in year end serials for 99's because of the 50 yr C&R requirements. That has passed as we are now into the A Series serial numbering period that is in print.

Ranger4444, I would presume the 4C is 1951, it would match the Chicopee Falls manufacture. The SP stamp is "Savage Proofed", meaning the barrel was test fired. The rest are probably assembly codes identifying which worker/inspector did which steps.

Thanks, Calhoun, seems plausible to me. The "SP" translation is an interesting tidbit, too.

I guess I could begin figuring out what to do with this M24; don't have any kids to pass it on to...
