I recently bought a new CZ 550 American in 270 that I'm dying to try out. It's really a beautiful rifle with a great trigger. A test target was sent with it Showing a nice 1/2" three shot group (oddly, it was shot from 50m ).
Anyone have any experience with this model?

I have the identical rifle in 9.3X62.
I love it.
Quite accurate, as well...

Thanks for the welcome. I'll let you know how it does, but I think it'll have to wait till deer season's over. I need to mount a scope on it and try out some different brands of ammo. Sadly, I'm not a reloader.

There is plenty of good 270 factory fodder out there...

I own a CZ 550 American in 7x57mm. With my 160 grain handloads this rifle, from sandbag rest, will print a half inch three shot group at 100 yards, time in and time out. A fantastic rifle and and even more fantastic caliber. Tom Purdom

I have a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 with about 900 rounds down the bore. It is straight from the factory - the only thing I've done is added Talley rings and kept it cleaned. It will shoot 1-inch (at 100 yards) 3-shot grops with any bullet and the ones it really likes to a legitmate 1/2 inch when I do my part. Never a single problem. You will really enjoy yours!!

These are, IMO, among the BEST factory production rifles, both in design and execution, ever made, anywhere. The superb traditional cartridges such as the 7x57 and the 9.3x62, in these rifles, using modern bullets and loads are about as close to perfect as can be had for most hunting here in BC and this combo can be perchased at a price which most can afford.

I have owned a whack of older Brnos and still have 3 21-series and one ZG-47; I consider the 21-series the single finest production rifle ever built and these CZ-550s are as good as ZG-47s, IMHO.

A friend of mine may be selling his CZ-550M in .416 Rigby and I am hoping to buy it, not that a BC hunter "needs" such a rifle, but, I NEED it, all gun loonies will understand! Fine rifles and can be made better with minor tuning.

Lots of positive talk on the cz's nice to see on a fair priced gun. Can someone speak to the action and how smooth it may become. Granted I am used to my sakos but every time I pick up cz 550 two things strike me, the clubby stock and more-over the rough action. Rough like I have to fight to get it to operate.I've handled perhaps a dozen or so and they are all this way. Do they loosen up with use, or do they remain "crude" feeling? I do like the thought of a fs 9.3x62.

I know what you mean. There's no finnessing that bolt. Gotta get rough with it. I think I may pollish the raceway and see if that helps. Can't hurt.

I noticed that on my 9.3 it was a bit rough cycling the bolt-when new.
However, after 200 rds it has a much better feel.

I have a CZ 550 Premium in .270 and it is very accurate. I have had good luck with:

130 gr Win Ballistic Silver Tips
130 gr Fusion
130 gr Ballistic Tips (handloaded)
130 gr Sierra Gamekings (handloaded)

150 gr Corelokt

All shoot under an inch at 100 yds off the bench.

I hear this talk about "rough" actions, but that hasn't been my experience at all. As to the stock, exactly what does "clubby" mean? Seems fine to me!

If the CZ 550 Action is rough cycling, then I have encounered new Rugers, new Winchesters and new Remingtons that are just as rough. Some cycling of the action a couple of hundred times took care of all of them just fine. CZs and the others smooth up real nice. As far as the clubby feel, I stand 5'9'' tall, weigh 150 lbs and that rifle fits me perfectly. To me, there is a world of difference between the feeling of a club and a rifle stock, however, I am not one to shoulder a club either. The CZ stocks do have a bit more wood on them than Rugers and the Winchester FTW, but it still feels like rifle to me when I hoist the CZ to my shoulder. Tom Purdom

I have been dragging a CZ american Magnum in 416Rigby all over the planet for quite a few years now and it has served me very well. I did have Ed LApour in Bremerton WA slick up the action and install a model 70 style safety and Weisner drop box magazine/floorplate assembly plus a single stage trigger but these are great guns as they come from the factory in my experience.

They ones I've had experience with are quite accurate, typically an inch, give or take, with just about any factory load. Some of the better ammo does better, and I'm a rotten shot off the bench (ain't all that good off hand, either). Good handloads will tighten things up nicely.

They're a bit rough out of the box, but as mentioned already, working the action slicks them up really well; or you could do a search and find some info on using some other techniques to smooth them up. Aside from that they usually don't need much except bedding and a trigger tune, the later of which is easy using the adjustments provided.

They aren't light weights; even the FS models are heavier than you'd expect from looking at them. But if you're into well made Mausers, this one's the bomb. Let us know how yours shoots.

Looks like most folks on here that own them really like them.

My 9.3X62 is a jewel, I guess I will look at another one in 6.5X55 or perhaps 30-06.

I have 2 a 6.5x55 and a safari in 375 H&H. I am currently refinish-
ing the 375 putting ebony fore end and grip cap, pillar bedding and
recessed sling swivels, they both shoot very well and the 6.55x55
with a 130gr TSX sticking out of it is one sexy looking cartridge.
I used a bit of JB's on the bolt and cycle, smoothed them right
out.
