I just acquired a new to me Sako in .222. I believe its a 46 action made around 1960?? s/n in 46000 range.
Looking at the receiver dovetail in which to attach mounts the front dovetail is tapered so I assume mount would also be tapered?
Where can I get such a mount? Better with ringmount, "all in one",or separate mounts/bases?
Searching on-line I see a wide variety of pricing and cannot see a good pic of mounts that show whether front mount would have taper. I do see where some rear mounts have a small stub sticking down which I suppose fits in rear cutout of rear mount.
Looking for advice, to make my search easier.
Thanks.....Nick

Period correct SAKO mounts are very pricey , if you can find them.
try sako collector's club web site.

I own a few SAKOS and prefer Leupold mounts,

The ones with the "stubs" are for newer models that have a recess fo the "stub".

Are the Leupold mounts tapered? I've not been able to find a pic.

Call Talley. They have the dovetail mounts in carbon and stainless steel with standard spacing or extended front base. You will need Talley rings to go with the bases. The bases and rings are exquisitely made. Talley is in Santee SC. The number is 803-854-5700.

Agree. I have 4-5 Sakos with Leupold ring mounts. They work just fine.

Thanks for the info so far I appreciate it.
Am I correct that rifle is a model 46? .222 clip fed 46000 s/n range. Saw a chart somewhere I believe the 461 model came in s/n 50000 or so.
Looking forward to playin with this one. I love the quality.

The 46 had removable clip magazine, L461 used a hinged floor plate. I’ve got four 461s with mix of original and Leupold mounts. I see no reason to add a base and ring type system to these little actions.

Don't they have a set screw which will mar the Sako dovetail?

The Sako rings will have a taper both on the front ring and the rear ring bases. Rear ring has the stud to stop forward movement. You can also center them from both sides , left side has small lock nut screw other side has large removable slotted lock wheels. So you can center bases to your action. This is the setup that was on my L46 serial 51XXX it has clips. And a canjar trigger.

No Problem I tried for larger size but it isn`t allowed iphone makes big files and I had to resize them badly. L461 model started at serial 57,869 from what I`ve read in 3/30/62 on this site . http://thehunterslife.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14777 Here`s my L46 got it for two bills back in 1978 off a friends Dad who said It wouldn`t shoot , glass bedded it and it does dime size groups now.

That’s what I have, use piece of lead shot between rifle and set screw

I have several sets of original Sako rings in various heights, one is an offset ring. All are are 1" diameter scope tubes. Nothing beats Sako rings designed for Sako receivers. None of that scratching or set screws digging into the beautiful checkering on top of the receiver dovetails (why someone would D&T and ruin a Sako receiver like that I will never know).
Let me know if you are interested in any.
