A nice hunting pic from MnFn. We believe the rifle to be a 1928 99H in 303 restocked with prewar 99R wood. Makes a dandy hunting rifle, and love the brown color of the antlers.
“The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com
You will probably have to talk to your cousin about that. I can’t give you all my R’s. I kinda like it. As you said, Savage should have made more like this, really a neat little rifle. Looks even better with a new Lyman peep on it!

Thanks Rory for posting it.
Glad you like the rifle.

I have a model DE in .308 I picked up from a pawn shop. It had been used so I decided to take it out this year. Fine shooting rifle. Was able to get one buck and one doe here in MS with it. I could not Figure out how to download a more clear picture onto the thread.

I have an unfired 99PE and she’s a show case queen. When I stumbled on this DE that had obvious use I couldn’t help myself. I’d like to find a DE unfired to put up with the PE but for now I will rock this one in the field.

My holy grail gun is a PE in 284. I think I could live with two rifles, a shotgun, and a couple handguns if one of the rifles was a PE in 284. Already have one in 308 but that's boring.

So my grandfather had a PE in .284 and he hunted with it. That’s all I remember him carrying. It was passed to my cousin and he sold it. That’s what got me looking for one. I had the opportunity to buy a .284 but couldn’t stomach the price. I was fortunate enough to come across a .308 unfired that was affordable. I will always have my eye out for a .284. Dreams are to have a PE in each of the three calibers. If I am to be that lucky.
had that happen with an antelope many years ago. too bad
