Looking at a 2009 Kia Borrego EX V8 with 140k miles for $5k.
School car for my son's friend at CSM. He needs a 4WD or AWD to get around when it snows in Golden and he doesn't have much $$. This vehicle seems to be an orphan, only imported for one year. I can read about it on-line, but wanted to see if anyone here knows anything about them from actual experience.
Thanks in advance.

Don't they share a platform with the Hyundai Veraruz? IIRC, they used a V6 with a timing belt so you'll want to see if/when the belt and water pump were replaced.

if a kid is on a budget, I'd be worried about getting parts for the darn thing when needed, even moreso if they have no idea how to do any repairs on their own....
$5K sounds like a lot of money for something to drive for 3 to 6 months...and then it needs repairs on something you can't get fixed in a shop or find parts at the auto parts store...
When I was in high school and college, I still thank God VW Bugs existed back in those days... $50 for one with a shot engine... $ 50 to $100 for a boneyard engine...easy to install... reliable and durable... and always got ya where you were going...

I think that the Sorento is similar to the Veracruz. The Borrego is an on-frame SUV, more like a pre-2011 Explorer than a crossover. The Borrego was the U.S. specs version of the Mohave. Doesn't mater now, as the kid's stepfather bought him a Subaru Outback, the perfect Colorado college student car.
