What do they do with them after they show them? And what do they show them?

They are shown at county fairs, state fairs, and livestock shows. If the calf is a very good one it will likely be shown in one or more of “the majors,” ie., Ft. Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Denver, etc. A certain number of calves from each class will be picked for “The sale”, where they are sold at auction. The winning calves from each class will compete for breed champion and reserve breed champion and then those will compete for Grand and Reserve Champion of the show. The Grand Champion at Houston this year brought $550,000.

No sir, it’s something I’ve been doing for a few years, and enjoy, but am always trying to improve.

We have a few show heifers of the kids we keep and breed. Once they're big enough, we will usually try a clubby bull on them. But my experience has been that you have to breed about 15-20 dang good cows to have a decent chance at 1or 2 decent prospect calves. A lot of throw-aways in this business.

My daughter has had division and reserve division and reserve overall at junior nationals. Champion at the Montana Fair also. It is a tough business. Super competitive and not much $ to be made typically.

That is not the norm by any means.

We have raised a few our kids have shown along with some we sold to other kids.

Market animals you can sometimes sell at the county fair premium sale. But if the expectation in this is to make money, people will be disappointed.

People who typically win at the majors will have a number of calves in their string in the show barn at home.

Young lady in Texas is known to have close to 20calves on feed at most any time. These are calves that her family has paid $40-$100k for apiece.
