How do you keep the front sight hood from flying off on a Whitworth big bore rifle?

The sight hood should be spring steel and such tension holding it in place as slotted with divots. Removed and 'tweaking' it closed a bit more, might suffice. If it's some kind of replacement, all bets off! My Whitworth in .458 Win Mag is without the "flying hood" feature! All else failing, paint your hood bright orange or tie a fishing line to it! smile You might also be able to find one aftermarket, though 'fit' could be really problematic!
Good Luck!

I've never had one come off of the ones I've owned. None of them were bigger than 375 H&H. If I was worried, I give it a couple wraps of electric tape. A lot of my guns carry a couple wraps that secure the piece of tape over the muzzle that i use to keep out rain and snow and debris.

I should have added that I removed the hoods when hunting, I needed all the light I could get when in the woods and I prefer an uncluttered field of view, but that is just me. I'm sure others prefer to have the hood on.

Had a problem like that on my NECG FS. Removed and applied a judicious squeeze - lightly without deforming it at all - on a padded vise has kept it on. It’s on a 404J so recoil is significant but it now stays in place perfectly.

I gave up on it.
Ditto the CZ 550 Magnum factory hood.
Best solution is a wrap of tape around the hood after the muzzle taping.
Or pocket the hood before a shot is fired.

Some white or glow-in-the-dark tape around the
hood could serve as a crude night sight,
point and shoot.

The NECG fold-forward hood is tops, followed by the one with a plunger fastener.
They are good as front sight bead protectors,
but little else.

Why not just use locktite? I always take the hoods off anyway. I don't like the obstructed view and I found they collect snow and rain.

I’ve had problems with the front sight hood flying off with several rifles. The last one is a 45-70 336. I finally just left it off. What a PIA.

I prefer classic.

My little Kimber 82, 22 Hornet tended to move the front sight hood after a day of shooting. A little Super Glue in the groove that the hood rides in seems to have solved the problem. Knock on wood 😁

I have also done the same with my Rem 725, 30/06.
