I haven't had this particular talk with my kids, and I'm going to have a sit-down heart-to-heart this week with my 3rd and 5th grade girls about school shootings, and what to do if one happens.

For those of you that are parents that have had this talk were there any things you felt seemed to really resonate with your and what do you think kids should know about these scenarios?

I would sit them down and seriously tell them to try like hell to avoid being around a school shooting as much as possible…
They just aren’t a very safe environment at all.

What other advice can you give them? Vote conservative?

It’s been decades back but we had the conversation with our son and daughter when they were pre-teen. We told them if there was shooting or other attacks being made to go out a ground floor window or exterior door if at all possible and don’t stop running until well away from the building. WE WILL FIND YOU. We assured them that if it turns out to be a false alarm we would straighten things out and they would not be in trouble. FLEE THE DANGER. At that time there was not universal agreement on keeping all doors locked. For that age group I still hold that opinion if the school is not secured.

Solid.

Can't go wrong there.

For kids?

Go away from the sound of gunfire. If your teacher says otherwise, run.

Throw teacher in hallway, lock door, pile all furniture in classroom up against door.

Private school. There's no requirement to have one. I don't know if they did or not.

The schools will all "lock down" in response to anything. That's code for stay where you are and wait to die.

We ran drills when I was in school. It consisted of turning off the classroom lights and have all of the kids huddle in the corner farthest away from the door. It's a total joke.

I told mine to get OUT, and they have my blessing to bust a window out if necessary to do so.

Same thing I told my boy. Throw a chair through a window if you have to but get out. Stay out of the halls.

Meet me at a pre-designated place at least a half mile away. I’ll be waiting for you.

I'm curious, if the shooter is in that hallway looking for targets, what would you have them do?

Throw a chair through a window, assuming ground floor.

If not, the conversation changes.
