Have an AERO Precision AR10 stripped lower and upper. Thinking 308 or 6.5 CM build with 18" barrel. Which way would be the most desireable? This would be used for paper and hunting up to axis and maybe elk (cow).

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Depends on how far out you want to go with it, but I'd say 308 unless you're planning to go 800+ yards with it at the range. Better availability and most people (myself included) would consider the creedmoor to be barely adequate for elk when there's bigger cartridges on the table.

Make it 20" on either one & thank me later.
If you insist on 18", then 308.

I'd take the 6.5 all day, every day.

Deans I like the 6.5mm CM due a bit less recoil and same terminal performance. Both kill bull elk just fine to 600yds. That said very very few manufactures can make a trouble free 6.5mm CM gas gun. From my experience you are spot on with the 18" barrel choice. 18 inch .308/7.62mm. 18 inch 6.5mm Creedmoor.

Thanks guys. Think I will go with .308 with 18" barrel an suppress it. Heard about the gas problems with the 6.5 CM so was hesitant to build it. Now to chose a good barrel. Been looking at Wilson, any opinions on them? Thanks again for your advise.

Deans Pretty weird. I've never had one hiccup with my 20" 6.5 cm. YMMV I guess... Wondering what POS rifles you guys are having issues with, so I'll know which ones to stay away from. Thanks.. Even at 500 yards, it almost keeps up with my CTR's. (.883 moa on average for 10 shots: near and far).. ^^^ Maybe fill us in on which ones are a POS, or the ones that are giving you issues. That way we can stay away from them. Thanks.. I'm like Tyrone, I'll take a 6.5 CM any day of the week and twice on sunday. As a matter of fact, I just sold my AR10 Armalite 308w because it did not even come close to this S&W Performance center 6.5 Creed.

Deans Im pretty partial to Faxon barrels, I'm running their 18" 308 Pencil on my Aero M5 build as well as their 18" gunner on my AR-15. I've also got a spare 20" Big Gunner laying around that imho weighs less than most companies 18" barrels if you decide you want to go 20" instead
