A friend asked me what RCBS stands for. I seem to remember from the dim dark past (early '60s?) that it stands for Rock Chuck Bullet Swage. But I don't recall the rationale. Is that correct? Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!

As I recall, some guys were making their own bullets and it grew into a reloading company.

RCBS was founded in 1943 by Fred T. Huntington in Oroville, California. Huntington was a dedicated shooter, but found it difficult to obtain quality varmint bullets. However, after reading about making a die to swage .22 rimfire cartridge cases to form jackets for bullets, he began to craft his own dies in the back room of his father’s Oroville laundry and dry-cleaning business. Because the resulting bullets were used to shoot rock chucks – a varmint of Western North America – he named them Rock Chuck Bullet Swage dies, later shortened to RCBS

Grosvenor L. Wotkyns, developer of the 22 Hornet and 220 Swift, was working with Fred Huntington in 1945. Huntington had not yet named his company, and Wotkyns suggested "Rock Chuck Bullet Swage". The story can be found in later edtitions of Phillip Sharpe's "Handloading".

Grosvenor Wotkyns did not invent the 220 Swift, he came up with the moniker. Winchester didn’t use his design of necking down 250.3000 to 22 caliber as some say Winchester didn’t want to use Savage brass and pay Savage royalties for their new round. Since Winchester owned all rights and tooling to the 6mm Lee Navy that’s what they used.

Grosvenor Wotkyns did invent/perfect the 22.250 (22 Varminter) along with Smith and Gebby. Which is still in some circles called the Wotkyns original Swift.

One of Huntington's wildcat's was the .243 Rockchucker., which preceded the .244/6mm Remington.

Cool name and history, but not as much as STOS lube. I have it on good authority that it stands for Slicker Than Owl $hit"
