Are 22 Longs even made any more? I haven't seen any in years.

It has always been one of the most useless and ill-conceived loads. A .22 Short bullet in a .22LR casing? What the hell is the point of that?

I shot a young bull moose not more than a few miles from where she shot that bear 15 years ago.

Feeding in a rifle designed for 22 LR, and avoiding a ring of fouling halfway down the chamber are two potential advantages over a .22 Short. There's a load sold here called the .22 Winchester Long Z, which gives a good option for those times when you don't need a lot of killing power but also want minimal noise and minimal risk of penetrating things you don't want to punch holes into. 29 gn at about 770 fps, just the ticket for popping rats in the shed.

Ha... I was shooting with DARBY last friday... his 22 is a bit more 'modern' than that old single shot... he can shoot it also, even in heavy wind.

Are 22 Longs even made any more? I haven't seen any in years. I just bought 2 boxes of 100 CCI longs. They're more expensive than 22LR, but that's what my 1890 Winchester is chambered in. CCI makes limited runs of them I guess. I buy them when I see them.

The .22 long preceded the LR load

Good to see you’re back T Lee. Your posts are always welcome! This story has seen lots of “air time”over the years! 🙂
I’m gonna rethink my suggestions for a “bear stopping” cartridge! I highly recommend this for those that think that “barely adequate” deer cartridges and buck (the male member of the deer family) are good bear stopping choices!😉 memtb
