The only reason I can fathom for the .22 Long was for them to be used in some revolvers with cylinders large enough to accept them instead of .22 Shorts. The .22 Long Rifle did come out later, and was named that way for precisely the reason I just explained. The Long was for revolvers and the Long Rifle was, well...

Joe is doing well, he blesses me with a few funnies and good stories now and then.

The .22 Long Rifle did come out later, and was named that way for precisely the reason I just explained. The Long was for revolvers and the Long Rifle was, well... The longs hold less powder and have lighter bullets than the LR. As a result, when the powder's burned out, they run out of gas pressure before the bullet reaches the muzzle and the bullet's slowing down before it exits. I don't know how long of a barrel a LR would take to run out of gas.

Hi Terry, I hope you and yours were far enough North to not be effected by that "once in a thousand years" rain storm South FLA got recently. Seems like you have already had your fair share of mother nature getting cranky.
Nice to see you post again.

RC, IIRC, a .22LR barrel longer than about 18" suffers from velocity loss. The remaining gas pressure (the powder long since burned out) becomes less than the friction at about that length. So a barrel right about 18" is optimum for the .22LR, all else being equal.

There have been many tons of beef and pork harvested with .22's of all sizes- - - -mostly shorts. My great grandfather stunned a lot of hogs with a short barreled .22 revolver before hoisting them up and bleeding them out. Knowing exactly where to shoot the animal for a quick, humane stun was a useful skill back then.

Good to see you’re back T Lee. Your posts are always welcome! This story has seen lots of “air time”over the years! 🙂
I’m gonna rethink my suggestions for a “bear stopping” cartridge! I highly recommend this for those that think that “barely adequate” deer cartridges and buck (the male member of the deer family) are good bear stopping choices!😉 memtb / The most effective (as well as cheapest) cartridge for "bear stopping" is still the .45/7All that one needs to do is hold up a cartridge for the bear to see and it will die instantly - no expense for a rifle is needed, and if a person can cadge a single round from somewhere, it will serve to slay bears forever.
Not a real member - just an ordinary guy who appreciates being able to hang around and say something once in awhile.
Happily Trapped In the Past (Thanks, Joe)

So a barrel right about 18" is optimum for the .22LR, all else being equal. My rifle has a 22" barrel. I've measured the velocity of Winchester rounds at 1260 fps. I don't know how that compares to shorter barrels.
