I’m looking at a very clean Rem 510 but know zero about them. Any info you all have about this model I’d appreciate hearing.

My 9 year old has one that was cut down. It shoots excellent and the safety come when the bolt is worked. They are easy to load, when the bolt is open drop a cartridge in the grove and close the bolt.

I had one a number of years ago. It wasn't a match rifle, but it was plenty accurate enough for squirrel headshots.

I'm a big fan of those & the variations. Kicked myself for overlooking them for so many years. Great rifles.

It would make a great starter rifle for an 11 year old.

As Region6 noted, the safety goes on automatically when you pull the bolt back. Very simple to load, you can push the round directly into the chamber or just drop it on the loading block.

Mine weighs 5 lbs 7 oz so it's easy to handle, stock dimensions are proper for open sights. Trigger pull is a bit heavy at 5 pounds but it breaks very cleanly - you can look at this as good training since you definitely have to concentrate on a good squeeze.

Like most all .22 rifles it's a good shooter. It wouldn't go head to head with today's $X,000 rifles but outside of benchrest matches or 400 yard shooting, if you miss what you're aiming at it won't be the rifle's fault. Also, like most .22 rifles, it has ammo it likes or dislikes. With the equipped peep sight (mine's a 510P) and my late 60's eyes it still shot a .339" 10 shot, 25 yard group with Wolf Match Target, and we managed .585" with Winchester Super-X, again for 10 shots.

Not sure if any 510's had a 3/8" dovetail for tipoff mounts but the long 25" barrel definitely makes the most of the open sights.

And that's what I know about them.

Subjectively, while it's fun to rip off a 10 round burst from a 10/22, some days it's nice to take your time, load each round individually, line up the sights and make every shot count. Plus, a box of 50 that a semi-auto would eat up in three minutes can last an hour with a single shot.

Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery.

I grew up with a Remington 510X single shot as my first firearm when about 5 years old. It accounted for alot of small game, and varmint control. Excellent rifles. I'd buy one again in a heart beat.

510 or for that matter any of the 500 series guns are great guns (IMHO)

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

I have one that was made in December of 1940, it is my favorite Rimfire rifle. I have killed a truck load of critters with it and i will not sell it. It wears the same Bushnell 4x scope put on it 33 years ago. It is a solid rifle and has accounted for a number of varmints. If i have the chance to buy another one I would do so.

I had one years ago, along with a Remington 521. I sold both off and I'm sorry I had done it. Oh well! I'll find replacements someday.

I like the 510. Great single shot 22.

I prefer classic.

I have or had 510,511,512,513 Sporter and Target and the semi auto version the 550-1.
Great guns that have been fairly accurate. There are a couple issues I have dealt with. First the trigger spring can be worn or possibly shortened and can cause trigger failure. I have one right now that needs replaced as it wont stop the bolt from coming out of the action when working it.
Second I have seen sear wear, some have been stoned more than is safe.
Over all I like them, they also made them in a nylon stock version, I have only seen a few in person. Lots of versions to collect.

I have a 510. It is a very nice old rifle and shoot very well with CCI segmented hollow points. Like most .22's, it shoots better with some ammo better than others.

Nice rifle for an 11 year old, if they are a good sized 11 year old. It's a full size rifle, and too long of a length of pull and a bit heavy for my 8 yr old Grandson. I ended up getting him a Savage Rascal for $150 new. I did not want to cut down the 510 but that would be an option for you if need be. If in decent shape I would buy it and sort out the details later.

Manny

I've had a couple of the later 580's and one 510. The 510's are nicer for a blued steel & walnut rifle, hard to warm up to the 580's plastic rear sight shroud. The trigger on all three left something to be desired, though I got to the point with the 580's (which I shot by far the most) where I could shoot it well regardless.

In total agreement with Manny, the 580/510 is good if it's a larger kid, had a Rascal (for the kid's - ok) and I think it's the best of the currently available 22's for a smaller kid.

I've shot the Rascal and the Keystone's Cricket benched at 50 yards and they are difficult to shoot due to the size, but they all are accurate at 50 yards.

Jerry
