Transition gun with a few non factory parts; most notably the stock.

That’s an example of the Factory Special Order fancy checkering pattern pictured on p.30 in Rule.

Need to look when I get home. That’s neat as heck. Have you seen them before?

Just checked again, the pattern in rule is not exactly the same as there are three points in front on the one pictured in Rule. My mistake

I’m leaning towards some homegrown checkering, pg cap, & studs; like I thought originally. That rearward extension on the pistol grip just doesn’t look well executed. I’m wondering if it was done to hide something.

IDK I'd love to see a s/n on it also. The inletting looks kinda sloppy but the overall dimensions of the stock just look so factory.

Hiding what?

Crack or other imperfection. You can almost make out something on the right side, pistol grip.

I agree with you about the dimensions of the stock, and that it started life as factory; but isn’t now.

Advertised with having "light handling wear". BS, that rifle has seen some major use. Been shot a lot and used. Carried a lot, but well cared for. The ding in the muzzle irritates me. It's a transition model, made in 1947. Of course, the front sight is unoriginal, and the rear sight looks more like a 48WH to me. The stock looks Winchester to me, as does the checkering, like the class 2 special order, shown on page 259 of Rules book. The listing also does not specify bore condition. That would be nice to know. It's probably fairly priced, but if I were buying, I'd want to know bore condition.

I’m not convinced.

Grip cap transition to metal wasn’t until ‘51; to say nothing of the checkering on it.

The picture referenced on page 259 states “all other supergrade features” - which would have included a cheek piece. It’s also difficult for me to make out much detail; it might be better in the hardback.

The checkering “extension” is very angular - unlike the style referenced by pocono on page 30.

I would like to see better pics (especially of sg style studs) but I’m still going with standard stock; spruced up.

It's interesting, nonetheless..

It is.

Last night I went down the Rule rabbit hole of “did they ever make a black tipped stock without a cheek piece?”

Turns out, they did, as a class 4 special order for left handed shooters.

That's pretty cool AK. When I was talking to one of Bobin's buddies, he supposedly worked for Winchester back in the day and he said he saw so many uncatalogued rifles go out the door that it would make our heads spin. He didn't like to post here because people would say he was crazy, so he kept info like that to himself. His brother Matt was one of Bobs closest friends, and they hung out quite a bit. I also knew another guy that knew Bert Hartman, and he told me the same thing. So, when I see some rifles that are questionable, sometimes I believe they could have been directly from Winchester.

The rifle in the OP is pretty cool, but it's been monkeyed with. Like the front sight that came off of a target model. Nothing wrong with doing that, as it can always be returned back to original. Whoever owned and used that rifle, used it quite a bit more than I'm used to seeing. However, they cared for the rifle and it does have character. They did not try to do a cover up job, which is commendable.

It looks like someone bought the rifle, so the price point at $1,500.00 was acceptable to someone. Maybe someone here? If so, I'd still like to know the bore condition, and if it still shoots well.
