grin

A quick consult of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website mentioned declining populations on the Northern Plains without giving a cause.

Given they feed mostly on invertebrates on the ground those areas that have experienced drought need look no further. As for the rest, other’s guesses are as good as mine.

As an aside, flat rooftops tho attractive to killdeer, have always been a population sink, at least where I’m at. Young hatched in those circumstances have virtually no chance of survival tho the parents will herd them off the of roof.

It’s a measure of how common the species really is that so many broods can be lost that way and yet killdeers are still numerous most places.

Wonder how many that fuggin idiot “Climate Czar”

I’d take a Killdeer over that lying POS any ole day of the week.
Probably the best scenario for him saving the earth would be his Jet taking a nose dive on the tarmac.

I have been on the prowl lately for feral cats. The big Toms have been hell on the birdlife this past winter. Killdeer are just way too easy a kill in my opinion for a good hunting feline! It's a brutal "food chain" around here for some!

We have a lot of them around here.

I have a 3 acre fallow field and they have taken it over.

There are a lot out this way.

I've kind of answered my own question. I was looking out the back window and saw all the resident magpies. Lots of them. They're death on bird nests and chicks.
