Laura and I were discussing a recent article...

Found this one (September 2020)... lost the other one... Doesn't matter (similar findings)

"The U.S. will be short approximately 642,000 automotive, diesel, and collision technicians by 2024 if current trends hold, according to a new study by TechForce Foundation."

https://www.autoserviceworld.com/tech-shortage-continues-to-worsen-new-study/

Parts and labor shortages are gonna be painful for folks that can't change their own blinker fluid.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

And that is exactly why I went into welding in the first place, though granted I am doing something completely different now.

That is the honest truth. Techs worth their salt are almost impossible to find, I’ve been looking for one for over a year. Granted, I’m very selective, but I’ve never had a problem filling a spot in the past. It’s not hard to make 6 figures plus in my market niche in the Atlanta area, but they just aren’t out there.

Grandson graduated from diesel school two years ago. Started working for a utility sub contractor. Lotso seasonal work. Lay off during winter. Once they found out he could turn wrenches, he has been in the shop continuously. Servicing equipment. Small engine work. General maintenance. Busy 100%. Zero layoffs.

Yeah. The average shop rate is only hovering at around $100 an hour.

Atlanta area is $140.00 to $275.00/hour. I’m at $165.00 and a month out on appointments…….

Been turning wrenches since 1983
Ran 2 shops, very hard to fill 3rd one.
No one wants to get dirty, nor put out $KKKKK for tools. Can't blame them.

No one wants to learn heavy equipment or trucks!

Most shops pay pretty low, someone smart enough to be a good mechanic can make more money doing other work. Heavy equipment pays ok, general auto not so much.

👍🏿👍🏿

Didn't realize that my opinion of a kid willing to sweat and work hard in a trade made me a simple fuu.ck.

Hope you have a good weekend.

Heavy equipment and big trucks are what a bud does.

Just over $130k a year plus bonuses with the construction outfit he works for.

I work in the industry(selling wholesale oem and aftermarket parts to new car dealers and independent shops).

The amount of shop owners and techs that are retiring or near hanging it up vs the amount of new techs coming into the field is nowhere near close. Not to mention that the amount of young techs that I see that I would trust to work on any of my own vehicles is next to nil. The industry is truly in a world of hurt… and so are we…

Why would a kid learn to get dirty when he can go to college, get a degree in general studies, and work at Burger King to pay off his school loan?

Exactly how it was here 35 years ago.

Vo-tech auto diesel, they got me in a Ford dealership on a co-op job.
Became full time on my graduation day.
Thought I was on my way!!!

Before long it became apparent the mechanics couldn't afford the cars they worked on. The certified diesel mechanic, with his $7k education and equally expensive tools made less than Dad did in his good factory job.

Well remember Dad telling me how employment would be much better for folks
my age once baby boomers started retiring. He was wrong about the timeframe.

A young guy with some brains and ambition can set himself up to do really well
quite easily now. Places you couldn't suck or buy your way into 20 years ago
are holding open houses and hiring on the spot. The local International truck garage has long ads on TV begging for folks they will train.

If I was that 18 year old kid now? He would have stayed in the business.

Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
