Anyone else enjoy getting close with a big/slow cartridge? I've been using SS rifles and handgun for the last several years, and the 45/70, 30-30 and 44mag just plain work. How worry they are with a can just make it better.

Same goes for the muzzle loader.

If I'm not using archery gear, my "getting close" usually involves a kimber montana in 7mm-08.
Though this year it should be another montana, but in .338 Fed.

I'm going towards big and slow more these days. 30-06 is still my favorite all around but most places I hunt 100 yards is a long shot. I'll be using single shots in 44 mag and 500 S&W some this year. Just picked up the 500 the other day

My 375 Clark launches a 270gr. Hornady sp at a mear 1960fps. It punches a nice clean hole in the boiler room. No expansion, no meat damage.

I had the 44 mag H&R years ago. Had a 788 in 44 also but I don't want to talk about that 🤥. Just picked this one up earlier this year. Mounted a 1.75-5 Burris on it. Shoots into 2" at 100 off a rest with my handloads and I can keep it on 6" steel at 150 off an improvised rest . Plenty good enough for the woods

Yes….while I do have a 45-70 Guide Gun, my handgun is my preferred close range gun! memtb

Yep, just finishing testing a 788 44 magnum shooting 400 grain bullets at 1000 fps. Doesn't get much bigger or slower than that.

That sounds awesome. I'm liking 300's out of the CVA pistol so far.

I had McGowen put a 1 in 18 on it. Cast range lead powder coated and seated to just under magazine length.

That would sound like a mouse fart with a silencer. 😁

This is my 445 Super Mag, 300 gran bullets even a 210 at 2,000 fps in testing. But it is way to heavy to carry hunting. So I carry a 4" Model 66.

Does a 500 Jeffery count?

I'm getting about 1.5" for 5 shots at 100 with 300 grain bullets so far.

i use TC Encore with 23" MGM barrels in 444 Marlin and 500 Linebaugh. for the 444, i use the 265gr Hornady FN, 255gr Keith type, 275gr Ranch Dog, 280gr WFN GC, 280gr LFN GC and 300gr SAECO FN GC. for the 500L i use a 450gr LFN. i used to use a Handi rifle in 45-70 and 405gr FN. i have a Ruger SBH (4 5/8" barrel) in 44 Rem mag with 250gr penta HP, 255gr Keith and 280gr WFN and they are around 900-1000fps. except for the Hornady (2300fps +/-), my bullets are going 1200 - 1900+/- fps and they can kill deer.

i also have a Husqvarna m46 in 9.3x57 and 275gr WFN GC(1936fps) and a Winchester m94 (1972 Top Eject) in 35/30-30 (JES Reboring) with 200gr FN GC (1700+fps). they kill deer too.

the rifles are around 1/2" to 1 1/2" at 100 yards (5 shots/bench), although i gave up benchrest accuracy to eh, as long as it's a 3 or 4" at 100 yards, i'm good. 30 - 40 yards are about an average shot in my area. 100 yards + is rare. i cast my own because i got tired of factory bullets. although this year i now use the TC Contender with a 10" barrel in 30 Herrett and 130gr Speer HP. after i kill a couple of deer with it, i have another 10" barrel in 357 Herrett that i will use cast for.
