A few questions wrt an engraved 99. Based on the serial number (295,000), barrel markings and front sight, the gun appears to have been manufactured in '26 or '27. The serial numbers on the receiver, forearm and forearm collar are matching. The collar is also stamped with an "F". The receiver bridge is stamped "Savage Model 99" and the engraving was done in a manner that incorporates the stamping into the engraving design. The receiver and lever boss are engraved in the same pattern and shallow style of other early production K's I've seen pictures of. Have any of you ever seen a K with the collar stamped "F", "G" or otherwise marked? How about engraving an already stamped receiver? Were these markings just a byproduct of Savage using readily available parts to build guns early in the K production run?

By collar do you mean the front of the receiver? Or did you pull the forearm collar off and look on the inside? I'm not sure anybody has pulled the collars on their 99K's off. Yours is in the serial number of the earliest of the 99K's, but I don't know that I've seen a 99K with the "SAVAGE MODEL 99" stamp on it. Does it have a pistol grip? Fancy wood? Fancy checkering? Is it maybe an A engraved 99, and not a 99K? Tue was still doing engraving at the very beginning of the 99K's. $80 in Jan. 1927 for a 99K, but only $9 to add A engraving to a standard 99. Here's the top of a 99K.

If you could do some pictures, that would answer a lot of things pretty quick.

Is the barrel engraved? A picture of the receiver ring and barrel area would help. Also, left side of receiver.

There are no markings on the front of the receiver. I did pull the forearm collar off and look at the inside, that's where the serial# and F are stamped (I was thinking I'd find a G or K and that'd answer one of my questions).
I didn't know that Savage continued to offer engraving options after they'd started 99K production. That and the fact that the barrel is not engraved, lead me to believe that I'm looking at an 99 with grade A engraving.
The detachable forearm has fancy wood and fancy checkering. The stock is a pistol grip stock but likely isn't original.
Probably just have to speculate on why the F stamp made it to the forearm collar.
Thanks for helping me sort some of this out.

The A engraving by Tue was available only for a couple months while the 99K was in production, Enoch passed away soon after the K became available. I would presume they stopped other engraving styles when he was no longer available to engrave.

Would your serial be 295501?
There should be a log entry for the rifle. Have you tried lettering it?

Woke up early in Columbus, Ohio. Nothing to do, so I started deleating pics from my cell. Got to the receiver pic of my 1929 K. It has the Savage 99 stamp on the receiver. This is the one that lettered as a K, sold to Jo Mora. Ill have to wait til I get home to check the serial, but I'm sure it's in line with the 1929 date.

Looked at the pic again, and it also has a proof mark on the receiver. The barrel is engraved matching the receiver.

I'm sorry, I think I was looking at that pic while I was still asleep, and it's the barrel that I thought was the receiver, that has the Savage 300, and it looked like 99.
