In March my A1c was 11 and my blood sugar was 269. Both of those numbers are high. Doc put me on metformin and I made up my own eating and care plan. I figured that if I don’t put stuff in my bod that easily turns into blood sugar, the blood sugar level has to go down. My blood sugar has averaged under 100 for the past month, A1c is now 5.5. Both are good numbers.

My intent was not to lose weight but I’ve lost 25 lbs since I started in March and am down 45 lbs. from a year ago, part of that due to pneumonia last Fall.

I eat meat, eggs, chicken, fish, olive oil daily, drink a half teaspoon of cinnamon in hot water, and walk a half hour most days. Zero carbs is my ideal and many days I consume less than 15 grams of carbs. Oddly to me, I am never hungry and don’t crave bread, potatoes nor pasta etc.

This FWIW follow up to a post I made in March, and a thank you to several who encouraged and advised me.

That's the easy part.

Remember, your best chance to succeed long term is to think of this as a life style change.

Best of luck.

You're doing good. The real challenge is to keep track of it all and fight the slowly rising numbers for decades.

Congrats. Now. Get big pharma out of the picture before you die.

Outstanding!

Keep it up, it’s worth it.

And metformin is generic so he’s not doing any favors for Big Pharma.

Stay compliant.

If he stays that low on carbs for a bit longer, metformin isn’t going to be doing anything for him. It should be looked at as a temporary aid to prevent damage while diet and lifestyle changes take hold.

I caught a Chinook salmon yesterday to keep the seafood going, 12 lbs.

Edited to add: I'm not a disciplined person. If this was hard and I craved carbohydate food, I'd probably not be consistent in staying with it. But it has been easy for me: eating bacon, eggs and venison steak, snacking on cracklins and jerky, eating local shrimp, crab, salmon and bottom fish my boys or I catch. Our strawberry patch is producing and I am slowly adding a bit of carbs like a handful of strawberries or edible pod peas on my morning patrol of the garden, while seeing if that raises blood sugar. It doesn't raise it more than 1-5 points, say 105 rather than 100. 127 is usually the number to stay under, though for us old men, 135-140 seems to be OK, though I haven't confirmed that with my doctor.

Nice... Congratulations...

Congratulations! Mine has never been as high as yours was, but meds, watching the carbs, and intermittent fasting have my A1c at 6.3. I hit the gym 3 days a week also. Keep it up!

What is your blood sugar running? If you can keep it under 120 you can broaden your menu.
About 5 years ago I did much the same thing and lost 50 pounds but I have gradually put 30 of it back. Last month my A1C was 5.8 & my doctor was very happy with it.. I am 78 & take 2 metformin 500mg per day.
