A friend of mine recently acquired an1895 winchester. Made in 1913. Chambered in 30-06. He wants me to reload for him. Light loads. This gun is in very good condition. My question is, will these old rifles handle modern load data on the light side of powder charges? Thanks!

I got this from Jim in Idaho:

Using a Hornady 130 Spire Point in two different .270's with 22" barrels, one a Remington 700 factory barrel and the other a Pac-Nor barrel, 46.0 IMR4895 gives 2795 and 2815 fps respectively. 41 grains gave 2528 fps.

But that 46 grain charge seems to be a "load that works" since it is the most accurate reduced load in both rifles with 4 and 5 shot groups staying under an inch and occasionally well under. I called them 7mm-08/270 loads since I worked those up before the Creedmoor became all the rage. wink

For whatever reason, maybe pure coincidence, that same charge of 46.0 IMR4895 under a Hornady 150 Spire Point also gives outstanding accuracy across three different 30-06 rifles at roughly .300 Savage velocities.

I tried it and it's a very mild shooting load and grouped well for me.
