So I’m in the process of cobbling together a 700 short action with a mountain contour barrel. Now when it comes to stocks, sporters and varmints are standard with very few options for lightweight contours. Has anyone ever used a sporter stock with a light contour? Wondering how it looks? Obviously there will be some gap, just curious how noticeable it is…

Would a 700 MR or 700 LSS-MR stock work for you?

I am more of a wood guy but I would go composite as well. I’m more about keeping this a reasonable build.

Absolutely. Just not as easy to find and I want to keep it somewhat reasonable in cost. In fact this is what I would prefer if I could find one…

Unless you already have the barrel just use a standard contour barrel. The weight savings is negligible, but the overall accuracy with a standard weight barrel is significant. You can save 1/2 lb with a lighter stock, another 1/2 lb by choosing a light scope and aluminum mounts vs steel mounts and a bigger scope without giving up any accuracy. The Mountain rifle barrel will save you 2-3 ounces.

But if you're already into a Mountain Rifle barrel used stocks turn up often in the classifieds here, on gun broker and other places. I'd place a want to buy ad in the classified here. I'd bet money someone here has a take-off mountain rifle stock laying around after they put a McMillan on their rifle.

Mountain rifle contour to standard contour is a half pound delta; minimum. Closer to 10 oz if comparing 22” to 24”.

TI stock is made for it

I would stay patient and wait for a MR stock especially if you’re looking to keep cost down. I’ve got a McMillan MR EDGE with a #2 contour barrel but it was inletted for that barrel channel. Just an excellent compromise of balance and overall weight.

Don’t know the exact weight but the laminated, mountain rifle stock has a much slimmer profile than Remington’s other laminated stocks.

I have a long action, stainless 30/06 mountain rifle with the laminated stock. It’s light and I think it feels really good in the hands.

A while back I put a 700 Mountain Rifle barreled action (308 Winchester) into a stock whose inlet was a free float for a varmint contour barrel. I chose the stock because of the free float and because it had much better bench manners on my front rest and rear bag than the mountain rifle stock. With the scope set to 6x and using Federal 168 grain match ammo I fired an eight round group into a 2" x 2" square at 300 yards.

Yes they are. I had a 700 rebarreled to 257R and put it into a walnut MR stock. It later landed in a TI take off and was perfect after that.

The lightweight ti stock just balances that skinny barrel much better - in my opinion.

The bbl I had put on my 257R was just a wee bit heavier than the factory MR contour. At 22" it balances perfectly in the TI take-off topped with a 2.5-8.

I don't know why so many folks replaced those TI stocks. They do work very well.
