Usually take 3 fly trips a year. Decided to head out to the Salida area to fish the public stretches of the Arkansas (Colorado). I'm pretty impressed with that place. Has several wadable stretches and it's packed with browns. Seems like they will hit all day. Having trouble catching anything of any size, but anything on a fly is fun. Has anyone been there? How is the fishing toward Gunnison?

Guess nobody fishes there? Fishing is top notch. Lots of 13 to 15 inch browns to catch. Caught 20 a day and they were crushing big hoppers . River was running around 1200. Can catch good Brookies up in the passes on national forest. Great area.

Well, I live in the area but am not a fly fisherman. Know a few but their kind make me wonder if their mothers had any children that were normal. I am a great fisherman who is lousy at the catching part. If you are willing to walk a little, Browns Canyon has a reputation for good fly fishing.

I'm just a western oklahoma dude who likes to roll out there a few times a year to match the hatch lol. I get it, some may come off as different, but they all have the same common goal, and that's to trick a trout into a fly. It's almost like traditional bow hunting. When it's perfect, it's perfect. Alot of respect goes to fly fishing. Patience and perseverance. Probably my favorite thing to do besides follow Brittany bird dogs with a 20 gauge!

I am actually quite good at catching with a fly rod. Catch every branch in every overhanging bush within a mile of the riverbank. We have many local fly only fishermen. One has written for several magazines. I can be fishing for an hour using lures without many bites and Bob will show up with his fly rod and start pulling in fish where I swore there were none. There is a local rancher between Salida and Buena Vista who's ranch has the Arkansas River running through it. The rancher has always allowed fishermen on his ranch and seldom have I ever seen anyone fishing on his land. If interested, I can PM you his name.
