A stainless takedown 10-22 stays in my UTV, and that's what I'm in out and about on the farm. It will handle anything around here that I'm likely to encounter, and just yesterday accounted for a coon and a groundhog.

I deer hunt a lot on foot...so that is what I consider a rifle for woods wandering...
If I'm out for just squirrels or shooting stuff, I take the old Savage Model 24 my granddad had way back when they first came out.
In todays world, for walking up and down Oregon Mountains in search of a volunteer Blacktail, to lay down his life for our dinner table... I tote a Ruger American Predator, chambered in 6.5 Grendal, wearing a 4 x 14 Burris Fullfield E 1 on top. , with 5 rounds in its 10 round magazine. ( being state compliant ). A little heavier than a good old 30/30, but a lot more capable, loaded with a 120 or 129 or 140 grain bullet in each cartridge.
Its easily a 300 yd gun.. So that's my Woods Walker.

Have been using my 10-22 TD as a go everywhere walking around rifle, and it's fully mission capable. But that bead front sight sits way down in the rear, and it's a challenge in full daylight. I suppose a guy might find a tru-glo or other fiber optic front for the rifle.
After several days of NICS delay I picked up the new-to-me Marlin 39M today. It's likely gonna have similar sight issues, for me. I'll play with it a bit,as issued, and I'll always keep all the original sights carefully, but I see this one getting a receiver sight and fiber optic front, too... I got the best deal going on GB the day I won this bid. A crisp, minty Marlin for <$700...
I actually got interested in the Savage 24s on GB, but the prices are just goofy...

If I'm just out enjoying the outdoors, most times I just carry a Glock 9mm pistol. If I decide to carry a rifle it's most often an AR-15 in 5.56.

I don't have one, but a Marlin Camp 9mm might be the cat's ass too. Of course you could substitute a Ruger PC or similar "modern" version. I think coast to coast this would cover it.

Pretty sure this'll cover most of my use... Great rifles for many years! I was looking for one like yours when I bought the standard grip model. These are amazingly accurate.

This one is shooting very well. Even with the factory irons... I did have to tap the rear dovetailed buckhorn to adjust, and it now shoots exactly where it looks.
Edit; In the era where everyone dials their scopes I find it a little amusing to fine tune my sights with a hammer.
Got a williams peep ordered (back-ordered)

What ever suits my fancy that day , if I had to pick one it’d be the 45/70 , nothing too big , nothing too small for that puppy . Kenneth

A Mini might work better in some places than an AR, if only for 1 reason, looks or perception. Seen milling around with a wood stocked mini & a 5 round mag, & the antis or chicken schit's may not notice much. Seen with black stock & 30 round nanner clip & the law is probably gonna hear of a terrorist in the forest.
But back to a short light mini, what are advantages of a pistol cal carbine like a Camp Car or PC. Yeah, fun, but I'm lost on practical use. Not putting them down, just trying to learn. FWIW, I have a Rossi 92 Lever trapper in 357.

I ask too many questions at one time I guess. But some I think, are relevant. Not relevant or no takers?

I ask too many questions at one time I guess. But some I think, are relevant. Not relevant or no takers? Yeah, you need to watch dat chit gunzo ! I once had a Camp 9 Carbine and it was the hoot. Put a folding stock on it and would probably been a very handy floor board carbine. Plenty of fun popping off at long range rocks or close up cans or anything in between. But the idea when I bought it was a handy house gun. It fit that bill and still would. But so do a number of others. Still wouldn’t mind having one but I’m about thru buying guns. Still, a 16” barreled 9mm wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.

Well, can't deny the fun or the art of plinking. My top 5 shooting sport.

Any 22 LR chambered rifle IMO. They are generally lightweight, easy to carry and fun to plink with - after all isn't that what a "woods wanderer rifle" is all about?
