Prolly means “extra”. Has something to do with the bluing on the rifle. That’s my 2c worth

My 338 win mag Xtr sporter came matte black with a synthetic stock and I bought it brand new.

My 338 win mag Xtr sporter came matte black with a synthetic stock and I bought it brand new. Yep, the winlites were marked XTR, and clearly not wood.

The XTR series of rifles were made from 1983-1989 by Winchester US Repeating Arms.In 1981, the U.S. Repeating Arms Company was established by Winchester employees to purchase the rights to manufacture Winchester-branded rifles and shotguns in New Haven, Connecticut, under license from Olin. Production of ammunition and cartridge components under the Winchester Ammunition Inc. name were retained by Olin and not licensed to USRAC.The acronym stands for "extra". I am looking at the 1981 Winchester Western Sporting Arms Catalog. It lists the NEW Model 70 XTR Featherweight rifle.

I thought US Repeating Arms introduced the XTR's,but according to this,Winchester produced the first XTR in a model 23 in 1978.Other's came later. https://www.winchesterguns.com/support/faq/historical-timeline.html

I have a Winchester 9422 first year XTR that I received for Christmas in 1978. My brother received his 9422 the previous year for Christmas, and it is referred to in the Blue Book as the "pre-XTR" model 9422. I believe that means that his has a higher grade wood, but they did not use the XTR designation that year. I know a few years after the introduction of the 9422 XTR, Winchester began checkering the stocks. My first year XTR has the uncheckered stock.

Yep. Xtr was 78. Xtr fw was ‘80.
