My oldest son turned 16 and when he got his license I had to add him to my insurance policy. I have a new Tundra and my wife’s 4 runner is only a few years old so they hit me $1005 every six months for his insurance.

With the used car market so crazy it took me a while to find a kinda low mileage 2002 Ford Escape. I called to insure the vehicle and they quoted me $306 for full coverage and $1053 to add my son to that car (removing him from my new Tundra). I said WTF it cost $50 more every six months to drive a 22 year old car.

For liability only for me is $205 every six months and for my son is $810 every six months.

I have been with this insurance company a long time and never had a claim. I think charging a 16 more than a $1000 for insurance is robbery.

There was no discount for being a 4.0 student or for identifying as a girl (they did not like that idea lol).

Is everyone kids insurance this high? Do I need to switch insurance companies?

It can be pretty painful. The laws differ but here it’s generally the vehicle that is insured not the driver. However if the insurance company knows that you have a new driver they’ll hit you hard, as you found out. I figured that since they always said it’s the vehicle that needs to be insured and since I have full coverage on everything I own it was none of their business who drove what when…..only that my stuff is insured and only licensed drivers operate my vehicle. I see no reason to treat my children differently than I would a neighbor that borrowed my vehicle, I wouldn’t call the insurance for that….

Our children all have their own except for our daughter but I have an umbrella policy now and it’s not an issue anymore for us but it was fine for the years prior.

One of my sons went out and bought a brand new Dodge Challenger scat-pack over 500 hp car for her 16 birthday, he has been taking her racing with him for all of her life, he swears he has her hot rodding under control, she is a beautiful girl and they have car and phone with every tracking apps know to man, but as grandparents we are scared to death, wife prays daily about this, I don’t even have the courage to ask about insurance, I did tell him she would be driving a aircraft carrier beater if I was in charge.

Shop around (but don't cancel yet) and you MIGHT save a little.

Insurance companies factor in the number of claims they pay on young driver accidents (MANY more that 40 year old drivers).

Rates will go down in 2-3 years IF your son has ZERO tickets... like NONE... not even doing 26 in a 25 mph zone.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

Insurance companies, casinos and the government never lose money.

It sucks, but I have 17 year old twins and I feel this firsthand.

Teen drivers are high risk. The insurance models take into account the vehicle they drive. My experience with teen (girls) is new cars cost less to insure. It could be due to better safety features or more cautious driving with a new vehicle. If you think about it, the damage to the vehicle is small potatoes compared to medical and liability to others. If a new vehicle reduces that, it will be cheaper to insure. Cost to insure a 16 yo girl in a brand new 2500hd was less than the cost to insure her on an identical one that was 3 to 4 years old. I can’t remember the exact cost, but it was somewhere around $1200-$1400. Got a good student discount and a big discount for completing some bogus ‘safe driver’ app training that took a few hours. This was State Farm.

Keep in mind that by getting him a car, you’re adding him as a full-time driver, rather than as an occasional driver on your and your wife’s vehicles.

I’ll see the same thing when SS18 gets his license, because I’m thinking of getting a pickup as a 3rd vehicle.

My wife has her insurance license and worked for Shelter Insurance for several years. Your insurance company is hosing you. We always had a $1000 beater that the kids were rated on. More than paid for itself many times over. One boy drove a duramax the other a 90 Chevy short bed resto-mod on 33”. Both easily $20k plus for around way less than $1000 annually.

You need to shop around. Every insurance company we have used gives a good student discount.

The only way I got around it was by putting the kids in farm trucks on the farm policy, and when they (inevitably) had a wreck, eat the cost and never file a claim. Thank goodness they never had a bad one.

My boy had the worst luck/best luck of anyone I know. He got T-boned twice at intersections by people running either red lights or stop signs. Totals, both times, but never hurt, thank Goodness.

He also took out my '97 Tacoma against a guardrail on ice, and it only had 330,000 one-owner miles on it. That one hurt, but not a scratch on him, and it's only money.

I'm so glad their ain't any teen drivers under my policy anymore.

Fugging nightmare per the 2 oldest daughters and their mother for a period of about 6 or 7 yrs.

Accidents, tickets, rates...

Youngest daughter never an issue.

2 oldest inherited some gene from their mom I think in bad driving.

He seems to be as bright as his dad.

My son got a bad speeding ticket while still 16 yo. Our insurance agent told me what the new premium would be. It went way up with one ticket so I offered the idea of taking his drivers license away, selling our third car (my hunting truck) and getting him off the policy. I was told none of that would lower my cost because he was still living in the household and a car was available. I focused on the word 'living' as a way to get my finances under control.

USAA runs me ~ $300/6 mo./ea. for the young'uns.

Plus good student discount.
