I started using a shot timer about a year or so ago, the kid and I went shooting the other day and I didn't bother using the timer until later. After about 50 shots or so I was thinking "you're a little off today Paul" so I got the timer out and sure enough I was about 3/4's to a full second off, after about 18 shots I was back on my times.

I'll be damned, the shot timer makes me a better shooter.

Do you guys that use a shot timer find you shoot better with the timer?

Only time I ever used one was shooting competition.

Never used it in practice. But it can sure tell you if you're having an off day...

Shooting without a timer is akin to running without a stopwatch.

Pretty fugking pointless.

Mine did make me better but only after it made me worse first! After starting out by rushing to impress the shot timer (it wasn’t impressed) I learned to settle down again and shoot smoothly. it has been a big help.

I use a timer pretty often. You'll get the most out of it if you use targets that you can score and shoot realistic drills. Then you can see where you're improving and where you need work.

The shot timer has improved my draw, split times and reloads but one of the best uses is too win free beer when your family includes jarheads and airforce.

If you’re serious about improving in any activity, you need a means of establishing and tracking your performance metrics. If you’re just doing it for fun, that’s another thing.

I knew I was having an off day and it told me "you need me boy!"

3/4's of a second is a lot of time. When I'm on my game that's almost 3 shots!

I'm doing this for my entertainment I have no plans on going into competition.

I was just surprised at my need for the timer, it obviously makes me a better shooter.

Well said. As much fun as "plinking" is, you can really develop some bad habits from it if you don't stay on point with your fundamentals. Using a shot timer and shooting established drills is a great way to grade yourself and track your progress.

Exercise versus training.

Training is fun.

Exercise is gay.

I used one all time for practice in the eighties when I was shooting IPSC. My best El Presidenty was a 3.79 with a score of 58. Watched one of the hotshots shoot a 60 in 3.25
